A Univerisity without WifI

fgilbert1.jpg As we write this sitting three feet from a wireless router, we wonder about Fred Gilbert, who will not allow wireless internet into Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, out of concerns about health consequences of EMF's (electric and magnetic fields) . “These are particularly relevant in younger people (who have) fast-growing tissues, and most of our student body are late teenagers and still growing, so it’s just a matter of taking precautions and providing an environment that doesn’t have a potential risk associated risk,” he said. We can't quite imagine a University these days without WIFI, but "There are plenty of computers around campus where students can access the Internet 24 hours a day, so it’s not like they’re cut off," Gilbert said. Gilbert added he believes there are many environmental impacts that are not manifest for 30 to 40 years after exposure. “Second-hand tobacco exposure is a case in point,” he said. “We’re just finding out now what some of those impacts are. Asbestos is another example.”
Hmm. We are putting on our tinfoil hat and moving our router. ::IT Business

The Wifi spectrum is not much different than cordless phones. Do they also ban cordless phones in the dorms?

I for one would be more woried about cellular phones than Wifi.

consumer grade wifi in north America is limited to 28mw of power. Radiation decreases at the square of the distance. If the pop is located on the cealing, your only talking about 10-18mw of power at peak exposure. Moreove wifi doesn't do much transmiting without active data moving back and forth. (you recieve more data then you send remember)

If Cellphones haven't started major outbreaks of cancer by now, or for that matter sitting close to those old TV's, I don't think WiFi will matter much to health.

Maybe he should add WiFi and make an hour of meditation a day mandatory. Everyone would probably come out pretty far ahead.

Well, here in Alaska, UAF forbids WIFI, as it allows a "wild west" style of bandwidth usage.
It is just a liability financialy to the college, due to pressures against possible untracable Peer-to-peer networking. He is full of crap about the heatlh worries, many campus's have a anti-WIFI rulebook due to pressures by media companies.

Well, it's interesting to see so many well educated people out there, fully informed about the health concerns (or supposed lack of) when it comes to EMF.
Are you all aware it is estimated that there is over 100 million times the amount of EMR in today's world than when your great grandparents were born?
This issue is, in fact, so well advanced, that in the eyes of many (with that figure growing every day) through independent education; independent of those media sources which kindly omitted the following from Gilbert's address:
"...or microwave ovens that leak. One of them is related to cell phones. You’re all taking a risk when you use a cell phone. Until we have resolution of the health implications of EMF and until you replace the president, that will be the policy at Lakehead University."

A strong stance which might be compared with the man, Dr. George Carlo, who was given $28m to prove that mobile phones are safe and proved that they are anything BUT safe.

Anyone seen "The Insider"???

The book Dr. Carlo published in the midst of a political nightmare?

"Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards In A Wireless Age. An Insider's Alarming Discoveries About Genetic Damage and Cancer"

There is a lot more going on than what is in front of your eyes, if only you will open your mind to look at it!

I know this post is from February, but just in case anyone reads it in the near future...I strongly suggest you check out this very recently written article: http://winnipeg.indymedia.org/item.php?2804S

As a student of Lakehead University I'm glad Dr. Gilbert is against WIFI. The internet there is fast enough without it anyway.

living organisms are collections of cells
cells evolved under the influence of the heavans
the only electromagnetic forces were those from the sun, cosmos and the earths internal responses to these until about 100 years ago.
we are composed of atoms which are electromagnetically glued together.they create and are influenced by electromagnetic forces.
we have created an invisible electromagnetic vibration that is shaking life in a way it was not designed to handle.we are in self destruct mode!
everyday you read of increasing health weirdness.
it can all be tied into our increasing use of digital square wave technology interfering with our internal communication and shaking the atoms of living matter in an adverse manner.
it is not a question of the strength level of a signal but its unnatural prescense in the complication of bioelectric life.frequency has shown a stronger connection.our digital communication using square waves produces very hi frequency harmonics.
the higher the frequency the greater the energy content.we are broadcasting in the realm of the natural vibration of water molecules which provides us with life and the life force in amanner we do not yet comprehend.
this relationship of artificial electromagnetic stimiulus and adverse health effects in all life forms has been seen, documented since the late sixties.
our collective stupidity is the problem not the evidence.

The majority of independent science is saying there are potential dangers of wireless signals on cells. We ALL love the convenience of wireless - but minimizing your risk is key.

I would urge people to be informed about the issue. Here a link to a 600-page exhaustive scientific analysis of all the research so far: http://www.bioinitiative.org/report/index.htm

In 25 years Fred Gilbert will look like a hero.
