TH Reader Feedback: How's PostHugger Workin' for Ya?

by Erin Courtenay - Madison, WI on 01.10.06
TH Exclusives (about)

A few weeks ago we installed a new navigation bar that we dubbed the "PostHugger". It allows you to jump around the site more easily, minimizing scrolling. It's the grey bar above every post. We want to get some initial feedback. Comments welcomed...

in this and the last survey about the commenting system there are no choices for just "good" or "i like it". i didn't answer either one because of this. maybe other people are skipping the polls because there are not a little bit broader range of answers.

i like the navigation system a lot and i think it's great that you changed the link on the bottom of the page to say "older."
it was confusing down there before. just one thing is a little frustrating. there is no "newer" button. after i go back a couple pages i have to use the back button in my browser to get back to where i started, which goes against the reason for having great navigation system. also may bring up issues again of am i going back to go forward or forward to go back? i think the posthuggers great except for that one thing. the "newer" button should also be at the top of the page. for that matter maybe both on top and bottom. or maybe "older" and "newer" on the bottom and just horizontal double arrows on top. people, from using the bottom links would know that left is older and right is newer.

great job on maintaining a dialogue with the users of the site and engineering it to make it more user friendly. it's nice to see these changes pop up.

Agree with zaxxon about these black/white answer choices.

My opinion on this specific item: PostHugger v.1.0 is OK.

On my PC running Win 2K, often a single front page post does not fit on my monitor screen and I end up scrolling down to see the whole thing, then scrolling back up to hit the jump-to-next button. But I still like the system. I don't use delicious/wists/digg on a daily basis, so I haven't used those buttons.

For the daily-regular-ready like myself, other useful top-of-post buttons could include 'view comments' and 'jump to catergory.' The least useful seems to be 'jump-to-page-bottom'. IMHO.

I also think you guys should figure out a way to make the site archive more accessible to new readers - some sort of "drill down/show-me-more" button? Maybe that's too complicated for the simple button.

I read TH entirely through RSS; the navigation bar makes absolutely no difference to me. There ought to be an option for this in your poll.

-totally thankyouTH

(even if sometimes there are some that we dont like, in general you get better each time!) and speaking of which i hadn'ttried it at all until right now-- and while i'm sure theres way more to explore, just the ablity to go to the next post without having to scroll alone is AMAZING!!!!

I wish the first click (in the TH logo) was more obvious. I miss it half of the time. Other than that, I love clicking for each post!!! Some times, the scolling habit comes back and I forget to click.

jump to top Tamer says:

Why isn't there a choice for indefference?

jump to top d says:

I prefer to scroll. Like reading a book, I look while scrolling. I do miss the next button at the bottom of the scroll though, it was nice to be able to just continue to the next page when I missed a day or two.
I have always read while scrolling through.....even the posts that initailly did not interest me. You can't learn everything if you don't read, or at least notice, everything posted. Jumping around seems to be like flipping through a magazine or book at the store...unless something catches your eye, you go right past some good things sometimes.

I like it now, but for the last post on a page, it would be nice if the next post button took you to the first post on the next page.

I have been away for a while and it would also be nice to have more than 9 pages. On page 9, there is no option at the bottom for finding any more older posts.

most blogs seem to have a rightward pointing indicator on the navigational element for older entries, so I find treehugger's leftward pointing older nav kind of annoyingly inconsistent.
