LIME: Timberland's Green Boxes

Timberland, maker of those ubiquitous nubuck boots and other outdoorsy footwear, announced it plans to use only recycled packaging beginning this fall. Reuters reports that the company will wrap its shoes in 100 percent recycled fiber boxes, printed with soy-based ink.
A label on the box will provide the equivalent of the nutritional info on food packages, with details on the factory that made the shoes, and Timberland’s impacts on the environment and communities. Timberland says the switch will not cost the company any money.
It’s unclear whether the company plans to increase its use of sustainable materials in its boots, though Timberland does use organic cotton and reduced-toxicity adhesives in some of its products. Timberland has a record of corporate social responsibility, and a section of its web site devoted to volunteer opportunities, environmental information, and community quality-of-life issues.
