James Lovelock: The End is Nigh
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 01.17.06

Although criticized for his support of nuclear power, James Lovelock is famous for his Gaia Hypothesis. Now Gaia is sick, and Dr. Lovelock has diagnosed a morbid fever that may last as long as 100,000 years. Read the article that makes Jim Kunstler sound like a cheerleader-"and before this century is over billions of us will die and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable." ::The Independent via ::Archinect

Er I think he's lost it:
"We are responsible and will suffer the consequences: as the century progresses, the temperature will rise 8 degrees centigrade in temperate regions and 5 degrees in the tropics."
Most climatoligists generally state that the world will on average increase in temperature by 1.4c, and most of that in the poles. While this model result may change with better models, J. Lovelock should back up such a claim with more than claiming to be a climatologist. Otherwise it's just ammunition for the extreme rightwingers.
Have a great day! Try not to shoot yourselves before lunch :(
But, but, but... - won't everything be okay as long as I buy $150 hemp sneakers and drive my hybrid to Ikea?
proponent of nuclear power and supposed ecological good doer? i'm confused.
I've got a prediction for the future too. You can read all about it in my new book "The Aliens are coming to suck out your brains through a straw, hide your kids".
It's only $19.95! It's guarantied to scare you so bad that your friends will buy my book too and make me really really RICH!
yeah it's a worry & I've already seen it being employed as 'greenies are all crazy' ammo by the rightwingers.
There was an accompanying news article with this one that asked other (qualified) people to comment. Some said they were dubious but Lovelock has a record of scientific discoveries.
Mr. Lovelock was noted for his endorsement of nuclear power a few years ago. He was recently joined by Whole Earth Catalog founder Stewart Brand (who I don't think has thrown in the towel yet on civilization.) Mr. Brand has also endorsed a new techno-thriller novel as a way to learn more about the real world of nuclear power (good and bad). "Rad Decision" was written by an engineer with two decades of experience in the US nuclear industry, and can be found at http://RadDecision.blogspot.com. There is no cost to readers and no advertising. Reader reviews can be found in the Comments on the front page.
If you're looking for some optomism, read The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology by Ray Kurzweil. If you still have anxiety problems, see a doctor or talk to an empathetic friend. Life is still worth living. Though you might eventually die, it still is a good time.
All I can say is have constant vigilance and ADAPT. The only way to survive is to adapt. Whether that means buying land in Anartica or downloading your brain onto a hard drive in the form of binary code.
Good luck! Here's to an exciting 100 years ahead!
I gotta wonder what kind of paper Lovelock's book was printed on.
"Though you might eventually die, it still is a good time."...wait ...WHAT?! man you kill me sometimes.
"I gotta wonder what kind of paper Lovelock's book was printed on."
Toilet paper.
I call this a Spiritual Rebuttal to James Lovelock's new book, "The Revenge of Gaia":
Spirit Speaks: Gaia will Endure http://curezone.com/blogs/m.asp?f=356&i=81
The earth is plagued with human-caused environmental degradation and destruction. Spirit tells us that times ahead will be difficult, but the Earth, and humans, will endure. The natural cycle of Birth, Death, and Rebirth will continue. Humans, as spiritual beings, have an opportunity to evolve and awaken.
Having read Lovelock's book, 'the Revenge of Gaia' Ithink it a pity that so many comments suggest he is a crackpot. His forecasts may not turn out to be wholly correct, but he deserves to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, it is too easy to turn a blind eye to what may happen and just live for the present. Pity our great grandchildren then!
