eblood: Cruelty and Drug Free Clothing
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 01. 9.06
EBLOOD clothing is "technical, stylish and ethical." it uses innovative fabrics, a rough street image, fitting the tast of those who truly live the street spirit." founded by skateboarders and musicians, the company uses no components of wool, leather, suede or silk as we don't feel it's necessary to exploit beautiful creatures just to make us look good". ..."we hope more and more kids will feel attracted by a clean, positive, cruelty and drug-free way of living showing more respect towards our planet, the animals and human beings in their everyday life" Clicking on any of the links on their site will get your phone tapped as a treehugger wacko, but if kids are going wear sk8tr gear it might as well carry a positive message.
commenter Mike asks "why is it that you insist on posting these nutjob views with no basis in reality?"
We looked more closely at the site and agree that some of the poliitical statements are a bit, um, unformed and extreme but they are skateboarders and musicians speaking to their contemporaries in the street. if skater kids buy into the vegan drug-free message then it is harder to criticize the medium. ::eblood clothing

did you read this insane website before you linked it? These people are nuts! Under start your r.evolution today (how childish is the period?) it sounds like a nutcase standing on a soapbox in the middle of a city. It goes on to sound like a child who wasn't loved enough. Its ignorant and this is not coming from someone who is an angry capitalist this is coming from someone who honestly believes there needs to be change in the system right now and I think this guy has flipped his lid. He also blames human curiosity and need for expansion on "western culture" has he ever read the history of china??? The Africans part in the slave trade? What about a little country called Russia? Lloyd why is it that you insist on posting these nutjob views with no basis in reality?
What's wrong with wool? How is wool cruelty to animals? All they do is shear off the hair of the animal in the summer, which then grows back, and they do it again the next year.
How is giving an animal a haircut cruelty? Do you feel abused when you get a haircut? Do you feel bad taking your dog (if you own one) in to get a haircut?
As for silk, I'm not too sure why that's an issue either? Do you have that much love for insects? Are we to believe that you never kill a fly, mosquito, or spider?
If you're a "skateboarder" do you swerve for every worm and ant that crosses your path (should you bother to look)?
Am I missing some feelings here, or does someone else agree?
Yet another t-shirt line masquerading as "design" and "integrity". It really gets old. Slapping graphics and/or words on a blank and expecting to be applauded for unique endeavor and vision -when they are neither- is tiresome. I call these lines (put out by 20 somethings) GOATS (Graphics On A T Shirt) or WOATS (Words On A T Shirt). However, in EBlood's defense, I can say that at least they're one of the few GOATS/WOATS who don't slam or reduce the apparel industry to bad guys because within the industry, there's a whole subculture with a long legacy of social responsibility commitments. Lastly, I note they don't mention where they get their blanks, nor do they discuss the environmental load of their design application process (plastisols etc). Similarly, if WOATS/GOATS were as environmentally conscious as they purport themselves to be, they wouldn't use cotton. It's estimated that over 160 gallons of water is used in the production of one cotton t shirt. Bamboo has a significantly lower environmental load. It almost makes me think that they looked for reasons to justify their choice of the t-shirt medium as politically correct, rather than the opposite.
they are just hopeless drug addicts with a need for a cause and a want to hurt someone else like "they were" when they were kids. This is what the touchy feely your feelings matter movement has done for us make people like this feel like they are justified in lashing out at everyone for their daddy not showing up to their soccer game.
by the way for those curious I'm 21 years old not an old guy who hates the change he's seen
Brenton, if you are really curious about the animal product industry, there are many, many sources you could check into to find out why many people choose to not use wool, silk, leather, etc. To boil it down to the simplist point, I would say that while some animal products can be obtained compassionately and respectfully, it's very, very rare.
My own belief is that you buy your wool from your neighbor, who you know honestly cares about his or her sheep, and gives them acres and acres of lovely wild land to live on, and sheers them as respectfully as possible (or, even better, collects the fur as it falls off naturally), then your wool could be considered cruelty-free. But when you get it from factory farms, where the bottom line is profits and these beautiful fellow Earthlings are treated as nothing more than machines, then you can be sure that there was plenty of suffering involved.
And as far as insects, I care about them. I don't see any reason not to. They are just as alive as I am, and have just as much right to live out their lives as I do. And since I have no real need to boil them alive for my own happiness, I prefer to leave them alone.
