American Automaker Turns Young Man's Dream in Reality: The Ford Reflex

by Jacob Gordon, Nashville, TN on 01. 6.06
Science & Technology (prototypes)

FordReflex.jpgAmazing. Someone finally made my car. At least they have the concept built. The Ford Reflex will be displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month—then they will give this car to me. Isn’t that nice of them? I still can’t get over it. Anyway, this sexy beast has a diesel/electric hybrid drivetrain powering the front axle, and an additional electric motor on the rear. (I’ll pump it full of my best biodiesel, of course) Solar panels grace the roof and help juice up the lithium-ion battery for the hybrid system. Interior sound insulation is made from Nike Grind, a material created from pulverized sneakers (but the legend is it's really made from the shoes of the poor suckers who lost to the Reflex drag racing). They claim it can get 65 mpg—but not the way I’m gonna drive it! Daryl Hannah already said she'll go out with me. :: Auto Week

Is it already setup for straight vegetable oil? Hopefully before you fill it with biodiesel, you'll get that converted, too, and then be good for 65+ and even fewer bad emissions.

This is just a PR stunt to get the public opinion up regarding Ford cars. This model will never make it into production. I have to give it to the design team, they are innovating, but somehow none of those concepts make it into production. Remember Ford Cockpit? Exactly!

jump to top John Smith says:

Just what I've been wanting a hybrid diesel that also looks cool. I hope someone builds something like this.

jump to top Tim Russell says:

I agree that this car will probably never make it to production--I'm being pretty tongue in cheek here with this post. I'm skeptical that these concept cars even have the working features their creators claim. But it's fun to drool, no?

jump to top Jacob says:

nice idea tho- tbh Ford has never really loved change. did you ever hear the story about Henry returning from europe after years of Modle T's only, his employees surprised him with a brand spanking new Model-A they made while he was away... so Mr. Ford looks at on the factory floor, circles it a bunch of times, then tears the door off with his bare hands, then proceeded to tear the entire car apart by hand!
(apparently its a true story)

anyhoo--- this does look liek PR (good PR) just like tehir Climate Change Report 2 weeks ago....

wanna really getthem changing?? adopt a ford dealership!

jump to top ScalarParty [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

The story of Ford destroying the concept is true. Henry was so convinced that the T was all a man needed in a car that he refused to change. Ok BUT that was several generations ago.

It's funny how many enviro people put down the domestics as backward etc. Ford has been building flex fuel cars for quite some time and has produced 10 million of them. These have mainly been Taurus cars and Ranger pickups. They were and currently still are the only domestic with a real hybrid vehicle with plans to build more. (Sorry GM but a start/stop full size pickup is not a real hybrid in my mind.)Does that sound like a backward company who isn't interested in change to you?

"then they will give this car to me. Isn’t that nice of them? I still can’t get over it."

am i supa naive and believeing you. or was that kidding? if it isn't true, what abuot the Daryl Hannah part??

jump to top ScalarParty [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

wow. it looks like i may have to eat some crow:
looks like the Ford Exploder is going SULEV!!! Wow! (well- the 6V explorer, anyway)

jump to top ScalarParty [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

no Tim, that doesnt sound like a backwards step--

and Ford did have Beth Ardisana running their alt fuels (and got extra brownie points for hiring women & visible minorities) and yeah, even the NYC taxi deal with natural gas crown victorias was a cool babystep.... and of course William McD re-doing deerborne is kewel-- if you are goint to compare them with GM sure they rock. and sure, it isn't even possible to make a steamliner turn at 90 degrees let alone 180..

all that being said-- did you read their climate report? kinda weak.. and where did the PNGV go?? and where do you draw the line between real solutions and lip service?

jump to top ScalarParty [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

That was one chuckle-filled post. Thanks Jacob!

It is really to bad that this is probably simply a PR stunt and that this will never make it into production. That is typical of concept cars however and hopefully some of the components will see the production floor someday, particularly that diesel-electric hybrid. We ought to be seeing more diesel-electric hybrids and I'm not really sure why we aren't. Must be Americans' odd misconception that diesel has to be dirty. Maybe once the new ultra-low sulpher diesel its the U.S., people's minds will begin to change...

jump to top JesseJenkins [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

Does anyone know of ANY diesel hybrids in the works? I was so proud of my Prius until I got wise (a bit late, it's true) to the (kinda sorta) perfect world of bio-diesel. I want a 5 passenger care that runs on soybeans (canola, corn, etc.) NOW! Doesn't even hafta be cool (as the idea of COOL cars seems kinda Happy Days to me, anyway.

jump to top Bob says:

Sign me up. I'm in for one - most definitely! Too bad Ford's Mustang Mach III never made it.
