Supermarket Secrets: Be Careful Where you Shop
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 12.12.05
We will cast our eyes about warily before we shop again after watching the CBC's expose on food safety in supermarkets. Chicken juice drippings appear to contaminate everything- the handles on the carts are appalling and the conveyor belt is completely disgusting. We can buy tofu and shop in the health food section but when it comes to the checkout-salmonella city. Website has excellent synopsis at ::CBC Marketplace

That is a great article with a lot of good tips for safe food handling at home. I read it while I was eating my lunch which I came to regret as I read the article. I never realized the grocery store was such a hotbed of germs.
Seems like that is largely the fault of the shoppers themselves (the ones purchasing chicken, that is). I purchase chicken somewhat regularly at the store, and find it quite easy to put it in a produce bag, which may mean using extra packaging, but keeps chicken juices with the chicken itself. it's both a courtesy to others, as well as myself, because the last thing i want mingling with some nice fresh rasperries is nasty chicken juice, even if i am a lowly meat-eater.
