Restaurant of the Week: Slice, New York City
by Kara DiCamillo, Newport, Rhode Island on 12. 1.05
New York City is known for their pizza and we love every bite of it. When we found Slice we thought, “could this pizza actually be good for you?” Well, sorta, let’s just say better than the others. Slice serves up their pies with a different twist of healthy alternatives. Choose from three different crusts (honey whole wheat, unbleached herb and spelt) and cheeses (organic, rice or soy mozzarella), two meats (organic sausage and organic, free-range chicken) and a load of veggies. They also serve by the slice for those late afternoon (or late night) pizza hankerings. If you’re picking up, check out their cool space on the Upper East Side (we like the bamboo floors) and if you’re ordering for delivery, they’ll be coming on their bikes. Hmm…we’ll start off with the “Skilled” please (black olives, eggplant, sundried tomato pesto sauce, soy mozzarella cheese on herb crust) and why don’t you guys throw a vegan brownie in there too. I understand the sentiment and appreciate the progressive ideas and actions as well as the abundant vegan options, but I feel that we really must adjust our views on how healthy meat can be for humans. If discussion should continue about this topic I hope it will not descend into another bickering between those who don’t eat meat or animal products and those who do. I would just like to state that at the very least, a great deal less meat should be consumed by the general populace and that this healthy pizza provides options that are probably not as healthy as they pose to be. However organic or free ranged the meat (and for that matter the cheese) may be, it is still contributing to the unchecked health disaster that is America in a very significant way. Hopefully they only provide small portions and people consume only a reasonable amount.
Honey whole wheat and spelt crust? Sorry, but as a Brooklynite I don't know if I can really classify that as pizza.
I think its a great idea, hitting a very underserved market.
Meat is not bad , but milk other than your mothers
is.
Slice is "the perfect food". i had it delivered for a group of friends and we sampled all different pies!! each one was unique and delicious.. this is a place that's going to be around a long, long time. it's what NYC needed.
