Reader Needs Help: Reclaimed Wood in Toronto?

by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 12. 2.05
TH Exclusives (q&a)

wood-toronto-01.jpgReader Michael Obadia asks the following question: "My business of designing and building custom shelving systems is going well. Except for one major detail: I no longer want to use new material for my projects. I live in Toronto, Canada and I am really trying to get a method for which I can purchase reclaimed plywood, lumber, or anything that can be used for shelving. Thank you all." I can't help you with the wood.. sorry but I did want to suggest an alternative for spam prevention. I suggest it because I honestly think it will help reduce spam. www.sneakemail.com you get to create a new randomly generated e-mail address for everything you do. mine for my typekey account is l78szhr02@sneakemail.com. and you can tell how many unique address's you get mail from on each address and delete them if you start getting spam on them

Michael: Not sure if they ship to Toronto, but you could check out the following post from Inhabitat regarding two major companies in the U.S. that specialize in recycled wood: http://inhabitat.com/entry_819.php
Good luck!

Hi: I have tons of wood for the taking from old fencing (I have a horse farm). There must be tons of ranches/farms that always have old wood laying around. Maybe try freecycle at yahoo groups - you can request old wood. You are welcome to my old wood and am in Warwick, NY (upstate).
Hope that helps.

Why not check out Urban Tree Salvage - they sell lumber made out of trees removed in the GTA due to storm damage, disease and insect damage, safety concerns and construction projects. They are in Scarborough.

There are about 6 reclaimed lumber supply centres between Toronto and Owen Sound. If you follow the main south hwy out of Owen Sound you'll run into several within the first 50km. I can't supply you with names, but I'm sure if you searched 411.ca by business type you could find them.

Here are a few I turned up on a quick google search. Both are in SW Ontario.

Have you checked out the TerraMia website? I've seen some of their wood at the Greenbuild conference and it is quite impressive.. the stuff they had there was from reclaimed highschool bleechers. It was great looking old wood.

I have two old grain storage barns built in the late 30's early 40's. There will be at least a million board feet of prime pine and some pine with a red tint to it. Most of the lumber is 1"x12"x10', and some 1"x8"x10". With the exception of the roofs the outer walls have been protected by tin. I am scheduled to begin the dismantling process Jan 1. These buildings are in the Texas panhandle area. If you are not interested I hope somebody is. My number is the best way for contact 806-202-1537 please leave a message if I cannot answer.

I don't know what kind of wood you are looking for exactly, but I am looking for someone to take away a scrapyard full of skids.

Michael,There is a place called Century Mill Lumber about 20 minutes north of Toronto near Stouffville. They have all kinds of different woods from pine to exotic stuff. Really great prices and often sales on various items. They have a special on MDF shelving stock now 6 pieces 3/4x12"x84" for $5.
