only one? i was hoping for multiple choice.
for other, i'm planning on donating time to habitat for humanity. i can already run wire for them, and this way i can get OJT with regards to framing. then i can use that knowledge when building my own house and hopefully keep my site a little greener due to less waste, i hope. i see so much at jobsites all the time. you could build a shed with all the stuff that's in the dumpsters.
Well, my small NYC apartment rules out the compost bin. (Although I am sure if I was really resourceful I could compost in a neighborhood garden.) I recently replaced my light bulbs. I already walk most places or take the bus/subway. I recently closed my business to undertake new endeavours, so there isn't a lot of time or cash to donate. And I already am a vegeaquarian. This little quiz made me realize I am not doing too bad. So, I am going to try to wear more organic/ sustainable clothing. It may be no secret that my fiftyrx3 project revolves around my goal to dress 50% sustainably, but I realize the REUSED content is really high. So, I guess I will try to put my money where my mouth is and invest in some Edun or stewart+brown... Happy New Year!
I have a good New Year's "ecolution": Cut phantom power draw in the house by adding "smart" Power strips to computers, entertainment centers, or other remote control devices.
Let's see.
My neighborhood already has a green bin municipal compsting program, replacing the lights in my apartment with CF bulbs was one of the first things I did when I moved in, I gave my car away to my sister in favor of a bus pass, I donate money regularly to both environmental groups and animal care groups, as well as an annual donation to the SPCA. I'm also currently volunteering as president of my school's environmental committee. I'm also already vegetarian.
I guess my "other" would be... go to the gym more often. I'm in terrible shape ;)
I have to say I stayed in the marriott marques in times square at the beginning of the week and I was very excited to see that they have cfl's in every light in the rooms
My resolution will be to buy organic\sustainable\recycled as much as possible. Basically put a lot more thought into any purchase I make.
Since our house and water is currently natural-gas heated I'm going to be looking into getting some solar-thermal to offset some of the daytime/winter requirements. Unfortunately, we don't have much in the way of property to get even a vertical geothermal system installed; next house. A little solar-electric would be nice, but we need to focus on reducing total consumption more.
I am going to continue to reduce my use of disposable items and excess packaging. I hope by the end of 2006 to be free of disposables all together.
Sofar this year I switched to a handkerchief, cloth napkins, reusable shopping bags, reusable flatware at work, and I've opted to drink from reused bottles rather than buying new.
it is a challanging, but rewarding way to live.
I plan on reusing plastic bags this year. Last year I began using plastic bags by carrying about 20-30 in my trunk. Then when I went grocery shopping I would reuse them. Now, I have decided to take this a step further. Whenever, I go shopping I will simply ask for no bag and either place the items in my shopping cart and then bag them at my car or carry them out to my car and bag them. I have over 150 plastic shopping bags and while I use them for trash once they are no longer viable for shopping this is a great way to reduce our use of plastic and slow our depletion of oil. Also, I plan on buying more environmentally friendly products like 100% recycled copy paper, 100% recycled toilet paper, all natural laundry detergent etc. I have already started implementing these changes but plan to be more aggressive next year. I don't dry my clothes in a dryer now but instead use a drying rack. This works great and my clothes always smell fresh. I realize these are small changes but if enough people implemented small changes it would add up to a very large change.
I'm putting in all CFLs, starting a compost and I really need to improve our recycling system. I'm not doing a good enough job with that. We also have to redo our stairs which I want to do with bamboo flooring.
Heh. Should I feel superior, seeing as I've already done all of these (except "other")?
No? Ok. I'll just have to work harder at figureing out what my "other" is...
I'm going to be doing some of the above and a few other things.
I've begun commuting with my bike year-round (in Chicago!), and I'm buying a better-equipped bike in January. My commute is so short, safe and flat, it's ridiculous to use a car for it.
I'm looking at starting a second 'green' business, and I've decided to drastically reduce the meat in my diet (info I picked up on TH lead me to that decision).
Other: Consume Less, Share More, and Reuse everything
I've started replacing my lightbulbs and started putting my compostables into their own bin outside but all they are doing so far is rotting. I really need to come up with a real compost system. When the weather warms up...
I also started recycling as much plastic and paper as I can this year even bringing home from work what I generate there (we dont' have a bin at work for plastics). In the new year I'd like to grow more of my own vegetables, start a rain barrel for plant watering and investigate alternative transportation.
My resolution is to consume more wisely, buy only things that I will use for a long time, things that are meant to be used up completely (and the packages to which I will actually recycle, or reuse in a useful way), hopefully I will be able to buy more organic goods (not an easy feat in a small Iowa town), and just have less stuff. I plan to get rid of a lot of my unnecessary posessions.
I think I've got my "other" now. Eat more locally grown, fresh, not-so-processed foods. I've been wanting to go raw, or mostly raw, for a long time, but all the recipes I see call for days of prep time (dehydrating and soaking things mostly). But I'm going to make a go of it this year for real.
Help me stop my junk mail. I have filled out every forms and I still get junk mail! I don’t invite junk mail by filling out surveys. We have used CFL light bulbs since they were available, reuse our shopping bags (Whole Foods will take a nickel off your ticket for every reused bag), our yard has been almost all organic for 10 years, now completely organic and looks great, we only eat organics, and all our household products are unscented earth friendly products which clean and smell better than others. This year we need to eliminate consumable disposables, use cloth coffee filters, cloth dish towels, handkerchiefs, use a clothesline or drying rack and start saving for a Toyota Prius for 2008.
