Bamboo Fiber Mandarin Shirt by Kavu
by Justin Thomas, Virginia on 12. 6.05

Kavu is an outdoor clothing store in Seattle. They feature a few items made with hemp, bamboo and organic cotton. This women's Mandarin Collar shirt is made with 55% bamboo fiber and 45% bamboo viscose. It has coconut shell buttons. Unfortunately, bamboo viscose is processed with chemicals, unlike bamboo fiber — darn. It's priced at $52. :: Kavu

Hi Austin, I am a regular reader of Treehugger, and also link some of your real good posts to my blog.
But, regarding this and the 'bamboo bath set' do you actually think that encouraging such industries will ultimately not lead to the destruction of the environment? True, bamboo is also cultivated... But, what's the use of such a cultivation that brings the environmental concerns back to square one?!
Did you mean Justin?
Bamboo is more ecologically sound than cotton. Bamboo is harvested on plantations and rapidly renews itself. It doesn't require pesticides or large amounts of water to grow. So yes, I'm encouraging these industries.
Hi Justin!
I would like to know more about the plantation and cultivation of the bamboo fields and the industry. Is the quantity more productive than with cotton or other fibres. Do they need hightec to produce it? Where is the difference between the bamboo viscose and fibre. Is one of the fabrics chemically processed and the other one naturally? Is there a difference in haptic? Where do you get all this information. I am doing a research on this topic and would like to get more detailed information. Regards, Linda from Berlin, Germany
Hi Linda,
Here are some sites that have more information on bamboo processing:

The production of bamboo viscose is much more chemically intensive than the fiber.
Justin

(I'm making an effort to give TH positive feedback when I think it cos I know you get a bit overwhelmed by negative feedback at times)
