Turning Parking Spaces into Parks
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 12.17.05

Who sez parking spaces are just for cars? If you put your money in the meter why can't you use it for anything? San Francisco artists Rebar plugged their money into the meter, rolled out the sod and built a park. The artists say: "The initial PARK(ing) intervention occurred on November 16, 2005 from noon until 2 p.m., without incident or interference from any level of institutional authority. Sort of makes you wonder what else you can do in a parking space . . . We can think of a few things. ::Rebar via ::BldgBlog more pictures below the fold

Coolest thing ever. First Critical Mass, now this. I miss SF.
imagine a block where a lot of rich people live, they could create a permanent park and just have someone feeding the meters. quiet street, no "undesirables" and a cute little park. ha!
love the PARK(ing). genius.
I LOVE THE PARK(ing)!!!! that is such a good way to revert 'pay' public spaces, and add a bit of green in an otherwise drab concrete environment (like in the pics)
we had a similar event in a pay parking lot! we had a raft of recycled materials on wheels and went around the city, set up in the parking lot (which i had asked permission for) we were a spectacle. the lady from the office building across the street came down as we were leaving to give us a mosaic mirror she had made! it was beautiful!
i want to see the these mini parks popping up permanently!
hey, i wasnt able to put my blog as a link??
We could have it both ways with BIOPAVERS http://www.biopaver.com
there was an episode of trigger happy tv once where someone put a mattress in the parking spot.. this is so much funnier and really cool.. I think I might try this is richmond
Well that's great. Two elderly coupled where just forced to walk an extra four blocks because some jerk took up extra parking spots. NICE!
Exercise is good for a human body, regardless of your age. More parks and more walking means a happier healthier population.
watch San Diego for this to happen soon!!! Great idea, and truly innovative!!! Good work. Event will be covered by our student org in early spring '06, check out http://www.clube3.org
