Montreal: UN Climate Change Conference Opens Today
by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 11.28.05

Today in Montréal the United Nations Climate Change Conference begins, and it will end on December 9th. This event will bring together more than 10,000 people including delegates, official observers from government, industry, business, the scientific community, and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) interested in figuring out what to do for the post-Kyoto era (sometimes called "Kyoto 2" - it would be really weird to use the name "Montréal" the way we're using "Kyoto" now...). Up to 1,000 journalists from around the world will be there and many parallel events have been organized by all kinds of groups (any of them reading this, drop us a note in the comments or by email and we'll feature you if what you're doing is interesting). This thing will be big! Stay tuned this week for more, including the expected statement by the US that they aren't changing their position and that doing something about greenhouse gas emissions and efficiency is "bad for the economy". ::Official Montreal 2005 Conference Website

Seems so wasteful. Wouldn't it have been more sustainable and eco-friendly had this been a "virtual" conference over the internet? I shudder at the number of limos, planes, etc. that this will require.
Chris
Chris-- you gotta go to a COP (conference of the parties) to really see it. yes it is wasteful, but no there is absoluteley no way that this same thing could happen virtually.
and while i personally think that Kyotos targets are a joke and not even a babystep (and perhaps dangerous if everyone start to sit back on their laurels), the work that many of the NGOs do and have been busting their humps to acieve would never happen without workshops lectures and face to face catfights... there are a number of wasteful things we ought to tighten the reins of , but the UNFCCC is hardly a worst offender (I'd go after the annual las vegas hardware show first... that could be virtual)
...also, there's nary a limo to be seen. the hotels are across the street and NGOs dont get treated quite like that. (ok maybe the Global CLiamte Coalition of dunces might, but aside fmor those petro-junkies not many limos..)
how come TH hasn't featured Saturday December 3rd, the day of International Demonstrations on Climate Change? For activities in yr hood, see link (mentioned by lee above) http://www.globalclimatecampaign.org/
let's get off our organically-fed butts & voice our support for activities to address climate disruption
