Q& A: Hip, Green Maternity Clothes

by Kara DiCamillo, Newport, Rhode Island on 10.24.05
Fashion & Beauty (clothing)

roundbellydress.jpg We received a question from, well, we promised we wouldn’t say (just in case her husband was possibly reading). Let’s just call her “tipster.” She inquired about eco-friendly maternity clothes and found it almost impossible to find any on the web. Well Tipster, we basically had the same luck you but did. Round Belly (shown left) seemed to have the most variety of organic maternity clothes with several different categories such as pants, dresses, suits, etc. We also liked that Round Belly uses sustainable business practices. Next we found Blue Canoe, a company that we wrote about some time ago. They don’t necessarily make everyday maternity clothes, but they do have organic maternity bras and nursing clothes. We found their items on several other random maternity sites as well. Under the Nile also had organic nursing bras. In conclusion, we didn’t find much. Our advice for the TreeHugger mom-to-be would be to re-use. If you have friends or family members that were recently pregnant, ask if you could borrow their maternity clothes during your pregnancy. Another great resource is eBay and even consignment shops. Chances are, the clothes are slightly worn and in good condition. Thanks for the inquiry and if any readers out there has advice for our “tipster” please let her know. ::Round Belly ::Blue Canoe ::Under the Nile

I have to second the ebay/second-hand suggestion -- when I was pregnant last year I just couldn't see buying clothes I'd wear for only a few months. I bought virtually everything I needed on ebay, and all but a few things looked completely brand-new. I literally had a closet full of clothes for the same amount of money some of my pregnant friends had spent on one pair of maternity jeans, and since I passed it all on afterwards I was able to feel like I re-used/recycled pretty well.

Okay, I get it. GreenRoom.ws, Green People, Eco-Friendly, yada yada. These companies are fine examples of how commerce can integrate with environmental safety. GreenRoom.ws is a new hip and cool stylish online boutqiue that's all about taste, beauty and progressive business. Unlike Green People, they don't involve the political aspect.
I recently had the opportunity to visit the GreenRoom.ws website and was plesantly suprise to find some realy high-quality eco-friendly designs, among some other things. In addition to their products, GreenRoom.ws seem to be attempting to incorporate editorials into the mix. I'm not sure if I was impressed or just plesantly delighted to see a new company doing what they are doing, but I wish them the best. I wish they would hurry up and get their site up and running so I can shop. My fingers are itching to click and buy.
