TreeHugger October Contest: "Old Faithful"

by Sean Fisher, Cincinnati, Ohio on 10. 6.05
Take Action (events)

1891newmail.jpgThere are some things that just seem to last forever. Perhaps it is constant maintenance and repair, good product construction, or possibly just luck. Whatever the case, these things are rare, and should be recognized. Not only do they ease our burdens ecologically and financially, they often have character that no new product could obtain. We would like to see your "Old Faithful". Send us a picture and short description of the thing you have been able to maintain through the years (and plan on keeping for many more) by Friday, October 21st. Email us at: contest [at] treehugger [dot] com and tell us why your "Old Faithful" is still going strong.

The old B&D circular saw I inherited from my Dad. He used it for decades, and I really don't know how old it is. I'm guessing from the mid-60's.

I use it occasionally, and it works fine. It looks much like this one:

This is not a joke, although it does sound kind of funny so I'm putting this disclaimer at the front of this comment.

My Old Faithful is my Diva Cup, keeping feminine products out of a landfill and working month after month. Can I just submit a copy of a picture on a website, instead of my actual cup? Because that might be offensive to people of a more sensitive nature.

Hi Cynthia,
Good for you, I love my diva cup as well! But my true old faithful is a 2 person table, it was the first piece of furnature I purchased 11 years ago, and I've used it ever since. It's been painted, the chairs recovered many times, side flaps taken off, put back on, screws replaced, but keeps hanging in there!

The photo of the stove on the right is the EXACT stove that is currently located in the house I am renting. It truly is an Old Faithful, it functions perfectly, and still looks beautiful, although it is (i believe) over fifty years old.

What about the article that treehugger ran about the guy who was 90+ years old and had a Bicycle from like 1914 that he had used every day since?

Note: Who / what type of bike is that in the picture above? I have never seen a design like that one!

I have a Patagonia sweater that is going on 27 years. It is getting a bit small, actually I'm getting a bit bigger, but still keeps me warm. The zipper busted out several years ago. I wrote Patagonia about it and after exchanging a few details, they wanted to make sure to send me the correct color match, a new zpeer arrived in the mail. Not only that but they paid to have it sewn in by a local seamstress. Sorry to say that someone burned a small hole in it so it is now for knocking around in.
