You love LEDs because they're efficient, right? That doesn't automatically make these cufflinks environmentally friendly. First of all, cufflinks don't really need lights, do they? So the use of power for something best left unpowered is silly. Second, I assume they use button cell batteries, and they aren't exactly the most environmentally friendly around, last time I checked.

Wouldn't a real treehugger not waste energy on trinkets? How many chemicals are in that battery?

A real treehugger would be out hugging trees, not wasting energy doing anything resembling computing. A real treehugger would only be caught dead in any outfit requiring cufflinks anyway, dead because they died wearing the outfit to infiltrate and sabotage a heartless corporation. A real treehugger would try as hard as she or he could to use every single calorie of energy that she or he metabolizes to combat the impact of all the other humans on the planet, and a real treehugger would only stop to have some fun after the planet was guaranteed to be 100% safe and sustainable forever.

I agree with the other Treehuggers: There are lots of earth-friendly, stylish cufflinks that don't require the manufacture of a battery and wasting of energy.

The point is, Snarky, that these cufflinks are actually significantly less green than regular cufflinks, and so they should have no place on a site like this. I like gadgets and computers too, but this product simply does not belong here.

There's an MIT Media Lab project with Boston's Museum of Science teaching young girls how to make LED jewelery. I've been trying for the last six months to contact them and get them to include solar in the mix as well.

Of course not, because something has to be designed to create and utilize solar energy AND the energy used thusly for the purpose of LED cufflinks instead of, say, heat for a Habitat-for-Humanity home, is wasteful.

So, the bottom line here is simple: this is wasteful and pointless, any way you look at it. It shouldn't be listed here on this site.

Perhaps, Lloyd Alter should be branded with a scarlet letter and banished to blogging on Luxist if he can't stick to the party line. It might be important to keep treehugger.com free of these questionable items, and of course we must avoid controversy. What do you all think?

Picking up on the paper-clip aspect of the post, I went to a friend's wedding and brought the full regalia, including french cuffs. But I forgot my cufflinks. I had, however, brought a travel sewing kit that had thread, dressmaker pins and tiny buttons. So I manufactured a pair of cufflinks from beer caps (Big Rock Traditional Ale, if anyone cares), thread and buttons. While they took an intense 20 minutes in my hotel room to make, they turned out to be the hit of the wedding. (Well, other than the Happy Couple, of course.) Who knew so many beer drinkers went to weddings? And while, perhaps, they're not as cool as LED, they were very recycley.
