Brightfeet LED lighted slippers
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 10. 7.05
For those of you that thought this writer should be thrown out of Treehugger for our post on LED cufflinks, we contritely and apologetically offer Brightfeet LED lighted slippers. These have true environmental benefits, as you can save lots of energy by never turning on your lights; Put a Petzl on our head and these on our feet and we might just go off the grid. Weight sensors turn on the shoe when you step into them so you cannot leave them on; Powered by lithium batteries and only $ 39.95. If they recharged by spring-powered generators as you walked, they would be perfect. Not exactly Manolo pumps, but it will come. ::Bright Feet via ::Gizmodo

but do they look like cartoony cute animals and squeek when you walk? :D if so they should have LEDs for each eye...with maybe a red one for the nose if you have reindeer slippers.
anyway. I just got some LED lightbulbs via C.Crane...the standard ones are just too blue and cool (in terms of color, not heat). I haven't tried their 'sunset' colored version yet.
You can save lots of energy by never turning on your lights? Can you show us your math? Because I'm guessing that the energy used to produce and dispose of those things is an order of magnitude greater than the energy of running a couple overhead lights for ten hours straight, which is about the most I could possibly find those things useful over a five year span.
sciguy,
these duds use only fractional self-regenerating wattage, and last a long time...longer than the slipper I would think (which opens up the option for hand remaking them).
Even a single LED replacement lightbulb uses 2-3 watts of power. And most folks will still be using conventional bulbs (60 watts), even halogen lights gets around 15 watts.
Part of the point of these I think is to not disturb others in the home, which turning on the main lights will likely do.
They would also be quite handy (or is that footy?) if the power goes out at night.
Then there is the Bling factor...
;)
Now I think he's doing it just to annoy us.
I actually built something like this back in 1986 using flashlight parts. The lights would come on when you stepped down illuminating the space ahead for the next step. Used it outside for a while, till the batteries ran out...
I invented these in like 1988!
These look to be an interesting DIY project for sure!
It would be more 'treehugger' to sell an LED add-on kit for exisiting slippers, no?
I live in London, UK. Do you sell in the UK or would you send apair of LED slippers here?
Thank you
