Just what we needed: an LED lit plastic bathtub

led bathtub.jpg Treehugger loves LED's- they are a wonderful energy saver with an important future. Here the designers have managed to turn the prosaic bathtub into a light show, adding programmable LED's to a tub moulded from polyethylene, a fine plastic made from nonrenewable resources. Now, your tub can consume energy just sitting there. It is lovely to look at, but one really has to work to think of something more frivolous.::Generate via ::ohgizmo

Well, the polyethylene ought to be recyclable, for what it's worth. I certainly agree with the 'almost' category though. Until white LEDs get a lot cheaper, anyway, most LEDs we see are going to be used in indicator lights, displays, and decorative applications. At least they use less power than the alternative technologies for those applications.

Ok, the plastic isn't renewable, but on the bright side - pun intended - if a tub like this encouraged people to turn off their overhead incandescent bulbs and light the bathroom by the LEDs in the tub instead, they might net an energy savings. It might even encourage them to use LED lighting in other settings as well.

you know, it's funny how people on TH just love to be contrary... here we have comments defending the TH-ness of this set-up... if the article had claimed TH-ness, i'm sure the only comments we'd see would be about how un-TH it is.

Well, I've been looking for a more efficient replacement for my sodium-arc illuminated bathtub, so I for one welcome our new bathing-LED overlords.
