BlueSkyMod Prefab Cabin
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 09.21.05
Here's the first picture of the new prefab cabin by BlueskyMod, being launched September 22 at IIDEX in Toronto. “It’s an experiment in simplicity of design, construction techniques and relationship to nature,” says its designer, Todd Saunders, the widely published young architect, born and trained in Canada and currently working in Norway. Manufactured from mostly local and recycled materials and utilizing processes that minimize waste, the cabin is eco-friendly. Its Nordic-inspired design and angular cedar detailing also make it a defi nite eye-catcher.
“When we sat down to develop the ideas that became this company, we all felt that our first design had to be a country retreat,” adds Richard Stark, BlueSky Mod’s co-founder with Hy Rosenberg . “First of all, the eco-friendly message will sit extremely well in the woods, on the farm or next to a river. But we also know that people tend to be more creative and open-minded when they’re building their own personal get-aways!” More to come on its plan and sustainable features.

Snow load?
hey John, we are in Canada and the architect is from Norway. It'll take anything you throw at it, probably 100 pounds per square foot.
Website link?
-it's not up and working yet. They expect it to be in a couple of days.
I'm curious to see how hard a fight it is to get something like that passed before a zoning board. It's beautiful, but many boards have knee-jerk reactions to prefab.
Looking forward to seeing the link and learning more about ordering. Read in a seperate article that they forcast cost to be $70K - $90K. I assume that's US, but am hopeful is Canadian! With shipping, etc. It's not a light purchase. By my calculations, that's $170-215/sq foot.
That is so freakin' weird.....
I saw this being trucked along Kingston Road the other day and I was so jealous I thought someone in Toronto was getting a brand spanking new cool modern prefab house....and it wasn't me!
They needed a police escort mind you as it was a wide load.
thanks for the post Lloyd.....that's made my day seeing that :)
Could this cabin be lived in year round? Is it heat efficient? What about kitchen space?
