Blueplanetsmart- One Cool Composter
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 09. 3.05
So often we talk about how green design should also be good design. Here is an example: where most composters are dull plastic things in the corner, this one will look great in your garden. Where most composters are square, "The BluePlanetSMART’s round shape gives it a surface/volume ratio that is smaller than for any other shape. The smaller the ratio, the less the impact of heat loss on the total heat generated and the faster the decomposition." It easily rotates to aerate the compost. It also collects up to 4 gallons of "compost tea" in the base and has a scale built in to let you know how much is there. Faster composting, better function, better looking- that's a combination we like.::BluePlanetSMART

made of "high quality, weather-resistant plastic"? hmm. i guess they all are, but... anyone know how much it costses?
We could not find any information on the site about the type of plastic they used (it may be there but we are on dialup this weekend) but it costs about C$250 (US$ 180) not cheap.
The best compost piles are just that, piles. Throwing all this plastic at is just another way of being lazy. What looks great in my garden is all 'black gold' that's produced by my compost heap, not some big plastic thing.
any bin that keeps the rats out and speeds up composting is a good thing, the sooner we save petroleum plastics and use grow plastics would also be a good thing
hey anon, not everyone has a garden. . . as an apartment dweller, I'd like to be able to do some of my own composting, and use the results in my pot plants. the rest i can take to the composting garden facility.
