Andrea Zittel: our new role model
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 09.26.05
We talk often about living with less but artist Andrea Zittel does more than talk- she lived six months in one dress; designs remarkable furniture; has created a series of intricate folding living units that challenge every notion about multifunctional furniture; has created living pods and stations on her property that blow away most of our beloved modernist prefabs. Where were we? read ::New York Times and visit her site at ::A-Z (check out the living units) and visit Houston's ::Contemporary Art Museum if it hasn't blown away.

six months?? and it wasn't stinky?
Her work and ideas might be interesting, but the photos on her website are just small enough to frustrate the average viewer and and make you dismiss the pretentiousness inherent in the whole layout. What is the point of illustrating a website with thumbnails that won't allow you to see any of the works in detail? Because you're an artist, we're not allowed to take a close look at what you do? Please.
The clothing item was worn daily, one per fashion season, but undergarments, including pants and blouses were changed daily so it's not nearly as austere as this site makes it out to be. As to the comments by Mark Turner about AZ's website, she has an excellent website. Many items are clearly marked "under construction" and perhaps you need glasses. I'm 47 and can see everything just fine. The woman is prolific. Part of the reason artworks are not produced large scale on websties is because the images and the works are copyrighted so that could be a contributing factor as well.
