akstlong.jpgDaniel Akst writes occasionally for the New York Times under the appropriate banner "On the Contrary". Today he writes about how Detroit can be saved by going green.

"What if a major automaker decided to reinvent itself as the world's first and only green car company, producing only hybrid, clean-diesel and other high-efficiency vehicles? Not Birkenstocks on wheels, mind you, but enjoyable, functional cars that get great mileage."

Ford and GM are the only two remaining wholly US owned car makers. I seem to recall reading that Ford is bigger in global sales. At any rate, Toyota is already half submerged in this new identity of green and already has 200K US employees. The window is closing for the US companies. Act now or Toyota and/or Honda take over.
