Sector 9's Pintail Bamboo Skateboard

Way back in ‘04 we noted Shiva-Tech were making skateboards from one of our favourite materials - yep, you guessed it - bamboo. Seems that link is no longer valid. So, how fortuitously was it that Tipster Tony P had found Sector 9, huh? They make three models of bamboo skate, including one for shorter enthusiasts. But the Pintail (pictured here) will suit, should you have the “need for speed”. Apparently, as we’ve discussed before with surfboards and snowboards bamboo gets right close to giving ideal pop, spring, rebound or general responsiveness. The Gear Guys describe the Pintail Longboard as a “downhill demon ... more stable and maneuverable at higher speeds than any other Sector 9 shape.” $70 USD for just the deck and about $180 USD for the whole shebang. And, as best as we can make out, Sector 9 craft them in the USA. ::Sector 9 Bamboo Series

Ana how solid is the skateboard made of bamboo?

I have a tri-lam maple/carbon/glass Sector 9 longboard that I commute to work with. All of the boards I have seen from sector 9 are great. The bamboo ones were released just after I got mine, and I am considering getting a shorter bamboo one. The bamboo boards appear to be made of horizontal laminated bamboo flooring, planed into laminations and epoxied together. Depending on the number of laminations, these boards can be either very stiff or light and flexible. The board I have is very thin and light, and is laminated into pre-tension. It flexes nicely and rides very smooth.
The outer fibers of bamboo are stronger in tension and compresion than Rock Maple, which is very strong in both. I make hunting bows out of bamboo, never had one break.

is bamboo a flexible yet durable substance for longboards?

i happen to work in a skate shop that sells these boards (and i am a proud owner) and i can assure you that they are strong enough to hold up in "regular" riding conditions but do give off a nice flex feel because of the bamboo construction. "regular" means just that- my friends and i dont beat our boards to hell every day but we do go riding several times a week, and the bamboo has never let me down. it is lighter than your average board because of the construction and requires less effort to push. it offers a smooth ride. the one thing about this model in paticular is it has what feels like a spine going down the middle. it doesnt get in the way of the ride but those who are used to longboarding will feel a difference. overall though it is a great board and i highly recommend it.

i just bought a sector 9 bamboo the other day, i love it. its flexible and great for carving. Im not lying when i say that i had it for about 48 hours and my friend broke he. he was standing feet together in the center jumping up and down and it snapped. it is obiously not as durrable as some other models. Theyre great boards. If youw want to know a place that has 1 left(i bought the other, that broke) you can call:a stoe in NC called Buddha's Belly, (919)664 8099

I have this exact pintail bamboo longboard and it's perfect. Super fast, smooth, and flexible. I use it to ride to class everyday at college. It's a little bit more expensive than most of the other longboards but it's worth it. Just don't do anything obviously stupid and you'll have the sweetest longboard to ride and show off.

How much weight support the pintail?

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you know, that we are selling the new sector 9 bamboo boards in our longboard shop. Check it out ;-)

These boards are made in china, not the U.S.

hello, I don't really know about skateboard, but i'm really interested in it. Sector 9 makes bamboo board for doing tricks? or they only sell long board....

jump to top kiki says:

i can also confirm.. this board is made in shanghai with near-slave labor ..not in the U.S. lets not give sector 9 too much blind credit as a corporation..they're out to cut their fixed costs and increase the margin like everyone else.

i bought this board a couple days ago. its got great flex, speed, and is great for carving. i havent tried sliding stop yet and you do get the speed wobbles at like 15mph if you dont crouch or tighten your trucks. i wiped pretty bad but i was fine since i rolled with it. i love my new longboard, i want to ride it everywhere.

I have the shortest of the original bamboo series and the pintail of the picture. My friends and I enjoy longboarding often. I have ridden other sector 9 boards but i really like how the bamboo feels. My mom ran my short board over right in the middle between the trucks and ti wedged under her wheels. She drug it for about 10 feet with her rear wheel spinning while the board was wedged under it. All this did was wear down the wheel, the actuall board is still in perfect shape and that was 2 years ago. Both of these boards are my transportation and i have rode each of them well over 400 miles totall over 2 years.

Sorry, but no matter what the "board" is made of, I find it a stretch to credit any skateboarder with green status. Skateboarders are among the snobbiest, rudest, least culturally sustainable people around. They have no respect for anyone and are only concerned with demonstrating their "coolness". Green is not just about the materials, it is also about life. Skateboarders are basically death. Shape up, then maybe you'll be green.

jump to top Griisson says:

Whoa! thats a bit harsh!

you clearly are one of those people with sterotypical mind and set in your way to beleive that, just like the "hoody culture".

I just happen to ride a longboard (and wear a hoody, sometimes at the same time) and that makes me one of the "snobbiest, rudest, least culturally sustainable people around"? I just happen to be in my mid twenties, well educated, fit and healthy, am in a professional job and do care about the world and environment i live in.

Maybe you should actually meet some of these people in person and learn something about them. and who are you to say I'm the least culturally sustainable person here? Hypocrite.

and what do you mean "Skateboarders are basically death" ? Cultured? Stereotyping on this level is just offensive. I am offended.

I read treehugger often, i enjoy this site and it inspires me. however, this is only the second time i have left a comment on this site, because i feel I need to defend "Us Skateboards" from stereotyping comments like that with no evidence or back up to your claim.

you've just ruined my day. thanks.

Rant over.
