The Deal - Peak Oil Fiction

by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 06.19.05
Culture & Celebrity (audio video)

thedeal-movie-01.jpgFollowing in the footsteps of The Day After Tomorrow but with less special effects – and possibly less stretching of scientific theories to accommodate Hollywood standards – comes The Deal. It has: People wearing ties, a love story and a central "what if?" plot about a $6 price for a gallon of gas and the consequences of that. You can see the trailer and read questions that the filmmaker wants to raise on the film's website, and you can read more about the movie here, here and here.

Consider that it is an independent movie with a limited release in a few select cities and that a wider release depends on how well the movie does at the beginning. So please, if you are in one of the cities listed on the website, consider giving it a chance and maybe you'll help the rest of us see it in our cities.

Gas already costs about $6 (€5) for a gallon here in Belgium, and it's about the same price in most of western europe. So it's not really 'what if'. It's not scary either, people just use smaller, cleaner cars and use them less. I have to fill up my car (50 litres) about once a month, which is quite affordable.

High oil prices in the US wouldn't just impact drivers; everything is impacted by the cost of oil, so it would bring extremely high inflation. Just think of 1980...

Europe is not quite in the same situation as the US, but if gas was $6/gallon in the US, it probably would be something like $15/gallon in Europe...
