Eco-Raffle Gives Away Hummer

win-hummer-01.jpgHow do you promote environmental awareness? With a Hummer of course! That's what a group in Miramichi, Canada, did. They needed to raise $100,000 for the French Fort Cove Eco-Center, a development with an "interactive display [to] showcase Miramichi's history and culture while promoting education and environmental awareness." How better to do that than with a vehicle classified as a heavy truck and with a fuel economy of 23 liters per 100 kilometers (around 10 miles per gallon). At first some people thought it was a joke and the Sierra Club was quite perplexed. The group behind the contest even received many complaints, but they stand behind their decision: "Leon Bremner, who helped organize the raffle, says the Hummer is drawing a lot of attention and that's just what's needed to sell tickets. He also says Hummers aren't any harder on gas than many other big trucks and SUVs." We prefer the Green Hummer Project.

Love the Green Hummer project. Are there any other groups protesting Hummers (and other environmentally/socially irresponsible vehicles) in new and innovative ways? Any towns that have fought against Hummer dealerships moving in?

For some reason (hm, 10mpg maybe?), few things tick me off more than being cut off by a lone suburbanite in a Hummer going 90 mph down the interstate.

Thought this was crazy, maybe you'd get a laugh

here is a group that actually convinced a raffle not to use a Hummer as a prize:

the charity not only dropped the Hummer from their prize list but also the other SUVs and gave away a hybrid instead.

hello and thanks for the information. I am intrested in Hummer. About 10 miles per gallon or 100 kms/23 liters, is that right #? Because if it is then its not that bad. My truck (ford) right now gives me 5.56 kms/1 liter and Hummer is 4.34/1 liter. So it won't be that bad when u look at power and other stuff. Can you please write me back and let me know if that is right # for Hummer? Thanks

Not to start a fight, but there are numerous vehicles on the road today that get lower (worse) mpg than an H2. Most of these vehicles (large pick ups) have been around for quite awhile. Why do individuals like yourselves continuously attack the Hummer?

jump to top H2 Owner says:

Oh, but we are saddened by people who buy big pick up trucks for no good reason too, it's not just the Hummer.

But the H2 is special in that, unlike big pick up trucks, it's very hard to claim that it is bought for utilitarian reasons. It is too expensive (and not very practical) for use in real work conditions and it's more of a status/image thing.

It's basically a symbol of all that's wrong with vehicles, and while other might come close, it's pretty much tops when it comes to glorification of waste and overkill.

Hummers suck because they are military vehicles. They kill many people. They kill pedestrians and cyclists. There is no rationale for a Hummer in a non-military context except vanity: leathal negligence vanity.

The idea that a Hummer run on biodeisel is somehow less going to run over and kill thousands of children is absurd. As is environmental contests promoting their use.

Also the environmental inpact measured at the tailpipe is a very naive measure. Manufacture as well as many other sources of pollution are often more signifigant. They are cutting down the Amazon right now to make palm oil for biodiesel.

Win the contest, melt down the Hummer. Make 100-200 useful bicycles! Melt down the H2 logo thing into a bullet and use it to fire a warning shot at Arnold Swartzenegger: "You kill pedestrians in my family, I'll..."

No, just kidding. That kind of anger and hatred is counter-productive. Though justified.
