Clif Nectar Bar
by Warren McLaren, Sydney on 06.30.05
Organic Dates, Organic Roasted Cashews, Organic Goji Berries*, Organic Lemon Juice Concentrate, Organic Vanilla. That’s the complete ingredients list for one of the new Nectar Bars by Clif. Nothing more. And if the readers who commented last time we posted on Clif Bars are anything go by, the taste will be yummy too. According to Clif Bar, (who alerted us to the new line) the 5 ingredients thing is across the whole line of Nectar bars. They also pointed out that each bar has two ‘servings’ of fruit. And one percent of revenue from sale of the bars goes to the Organic Farming Research Foundation under a scheme organised by 1% for the Planet Expected to be about $1.80 USD, when available this northern summer. ::Nectar by Clif (*Wanna know what a Goji berry is? Read on ... )
“The Goji berry is a deep-red, dried fruit about the same size as a raisin. It tastes something like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. They contain 18 amino acids (six times higher than bee pollen) including all 8 essential amino acids. Indigenous to Northern China and Tibet and have been eaten by those cultures for centuries. Goji berries have been traditionally regarded to be a strength building and longevity food, and are credited with increasing people's spirits and optimism (even with giving people eternal happiness!).”
So say the Clif Bar folks.

But what about the wrapper ? Where does that end up ?
Surely it would just be better to eat 2 fruits :) no waste there
Absolutely. Eating fruit is best. But not always possible. For example, a while back I did a 17 day walk in the desert, with daily temps about 30oC. Fruit doesn't keep very well that long, in that heat, squished inside a pack. The wrapper? We're not saying any of the products reviewed on Treehugger are perfect. Just that they show a better way forward than most. We try to seek out the positive not the negative.
i have an idea: dont eat at all! solves the problem of wasteful packaging and eating the right/wrong foods. also no need for: refridgerator, dishwashing, fussing over composting, time spent driving to/from the store, less pooping=less toilet paper/flushing...etc
Cliff Bar stole this product idea from Larabar, however, Larabars are completely raw and whole. Larabars are cheaper and have always beed vegan, unlike some of Cliff Bars other products.
www.larabar.com for info.
sure, larabar had previously introduced a wonderful product in the same vein as the clif 'nectar,' but if you are going to criticize--then i ask: why isn't lara concerned with using organic ingredients?
