Solar Powered GPS Unit from F-Tech

by TreeHugger on 05.19.05
Science & Technology (solar)

gps.jpg This just makes so much sense-when you are out in the woods on a long trip the last thing you need is to have your GPS run out of batteries. It still has a rechargeable battery, but with the addition of a solar power board this GPS unit lasts three times longer than conventional units- up to 30 hours. ::f-tech via ::engadget by [LA]

From a Gadgetcentric point of view, I suppose a solar powered GPS makes sense. Unless you lose it, or the sun don't shine for a while, or you drop it and break it.

For much less you could purchase a good topographical map of the area you would be traversing, and a good compass. With the left over cash, you could buy a good book on map reading.

We had a good motto in the military...K.I.S.S.... keep it simple.......fill in the blank.

Gadgets have built in draw backs.......knowledge and skill cannot be lost, broken, or run out of battery power.
