Paloma Glass-infused Pottery
by Warren McLaren, Sydney on 05.26.05
Huh? Glass-infused? Basically ceramics which have been fired with the inclusion of imbedded reused glass pieces. The glass has been collected from roadsides, trails, recycle bins or used jam jars and wine bottles. When added to the pottery it creates durable candleholders, incense burners, clocks, tiles, stepping stones and even jewellery. Although strong and heat resistant, the semi porous nature of the now crackled glass makes them unsuitable use with food or liquids. Various colours available. ::Paloma Pottery [by WM]

You can actually make a food safe, non-crazing glaze by adding a little clay, or some other ingredients to finely ground glass. Many folk potters in appalachia made glazes out of old coke bottles, ash, and locally dug clays and minerals.
The idea with melting old glass is usually to get that thick crazed looked, though it looks kind of amateurish to me.
I just wanted to say thank you to Tree Hugger website. Your site has given me some referrals and I appreciate it!
