Konarka Technologies Keeps the US Army in Solar Power

Shelter_camoflage.jpgThe US Army sees a green solution to its portable power problems. The practicality of Konarka’s plastic solar power technology gives it an edge over the competition. Because their technology is printed on the nanoscale and applied to a plastic energy conducting polymer material, it is flexible, lightweight, inexpensive, and can be almost any color (camouflage in this case). Designers should take a cue from the army. By incorporating color and design in solar power products, they could be used on more then just the roof or out of sight locations, but be a primary element of housing and environment design. Konarka agrees, and has some examples of what it intends to produce for the commercial market.

By mimicking nature, and operating on the nanoscale, Konarka’s technology is a revolution in solar power design. From their website:

The numbers seem to approach half of what rigid SPV cells can accomplish in terms of gross efficiency. However, few fabrics or films achieve a design life over ten years, which would be one half to a third of that for traditional substrate SPV surfaces. Cost per m2 would need to be approximately 20% of that for traditional SPV substrates in order to "break even" on the combination of efficiency and design life. OK for a bivouac or emergency shelters but not ok for buildings.

While the efficiency is lower then SPV right now, stay tuned for developments in nanotechnology that enhance not only increased harvesting of solar energy but better electron transport through the semiconductor surface. The technology is still in its 'baby' phase, and there are unique possibilities for growth and improvement that other solar technologies don't have. One of those is the ability to decrease manufacturing cost, as the materials are not the inherently expensive aspects of the product, so it is possible that it is below 20%, but they don't offer price listings on the web-site. I'll look into price range.
