Harvey's Seatbelt Bags

Harvey's Seatbelt BagsWe featured Low+Tight's seatbelt bags previously on Treehugger. Harvey's also makes bags out of seatbelts — the style is a little more streamlined and they have a wider range of colors available — who knew they made pink seatbelts? We like the guaranteed durability factor of these bags — this material is meant to save your life after all. There are many models available ranging from $60.00 to $120.00. :: Harvey's Seatbelt Bags via PopGadget [by Justin Thomas]

These certainly get points for their durability and their donations to MADD, but how are these environmentally friendly, exactly? Am I missing something?

Anna, there is an argument that it's better than throwing away old seatbelts - but we should be designing the seatbelts out of something that can be upcycled.

jump to top Ben Schiendelman says:

But I'm 99% sure that they are manufacturing seat belt material for these belts - pink seatbelts? If they are, then these are really just another product, without any "green" aspect. If you can find on your site where they say they are using recycled belts, please point me to it, cause I can't find it.

Not trying to be contrary, just thinking these aren't quite as eco as they might seem.

jump to top Anna says:

I'd have to second Anna. In theory it is a neat idea (if for no other reason than it might prompt some thinking about designing with second use materials) but I saw one of these in the knock-off kiosk in the mall yesterday and they look distinctly non-recylced in origin.

jump to top Erin says:

Since this is now buried on page three, I guess that's the end of that.

jump to top Anna says:

who cares how damn eco-friendly they are, they're functional and very cool-looking. furthermore, attention shouldn't be averted from their other commendable acts.

jump to top Jaime says:

i actually tried to contact this company awhile back to ask them if they were actually recycled seat belts and inquired about the dye and such - i got no response...

jump to top kara says:

I called attention to their other acts, so what's your problem, exactly, Jaime?

I questioned it because as far as I can tell, they aren't eco-friendly, and what site are we on here? Derr.
