Eco-tip: Pine cones make good cat toys

Instead of buying small toys made in Asia from questionable materials, under questionable labor standards and shipped across the globe using much precious energy, why not just go for something all natural, biodegradable and free. My experience has shown that pine cones are a perfect toy for playful kittens. They're hard enough to withstand abuse, yet light enough to be easily thrown around during play (especially on hardwood floors). You can also tie them to a string and have them dangle around. My middle-aged cat LOVES playing football with pine cones, esp. the smaller ones. His favourite football toy is actually the dry wrinkled stem off a pumpkin. He also likes a small, tight bundle of straw as he can get his claws into it to toss & juggle it.
don't little bugs sometimes live in Pine cones? Perhaps a day or two in a deep freeze or a rest next to a baked potato while its being cooked might kill off any bugs in the pine cones? Has anyone tried this or experience this problem.

JonathnanD - your cat will love the bugs, if there are any. If it's been dry out, there won't be anyway.
