This chair designed by Nigel Coates, is made of Loomtex on a stainless steel frame. Loomtex is a manufactured fiber, made of wire filament wrapped in recycled paper, colored with natural dyes and then coated for stain resistance. It was invented during the 1940s when a cane and rattan company in the US were unable to get a reliable source of imported cane and rattan, and was forced to improvise. The result looks very similar to rattan, and is reportedly just as sturdy and more versatile as far as shape and color. The base price for the chair is around $400. :: Oyster Chair [by Justin Thomas]
