ALMOST: T-Duster Reusable T-Shirts

Business & Politics (almosts)

TH_Tdustmain_033105.jpg We really want to love these cute little T-Shirts from the design team at Atomic Factory. They're really cute, and when they wear out, you just tear along the dotted lines to convert your shirt to a pile of soft cleanup rags for washing windows, the car, or whatever. It seems like recycling at its best. But there's the rub: These shirts are so easy to tear apart because of actual die-cut holes, that they can't be very durable. A shirt that wears out three times as fast as a regular one doesn't do much to reduce material usage, even if you can use the scrap. Give us some printed dashed lines and scissors -- all the cuteness AND all the longevity. Cause if you've got such a cute looking shirt, you want to wear it forever, right?

It doesn't look very warm.

They just couldn't help themselves, could they. They just couldn't let the t-shirt stand on its own. They just had to objectify the woman in the process and pander to our irrational sexual desires ala Maxim and Jessica Simpson. "Dood, look at her nipples, that shirt is way cool!" I don't see how any of this is sustainable - the mentality or the reality of the concept as pointed out by your article. Eject.

From the perkiness of the model, unless these are built-in plastic thimbles, the die-cut holes might substitute for the Velcro rip-away effect.

PS :: Screw the T-shirt, get a load of their website... love the egg.

"irrational sexual desires"

Damn...and people call conservatives "prudes." 0_o

But, I agree with your assessment about the technical aspects of the shirt. Now...is it biodegradable and compostable? :D

No, no, I'm not a prude! "Prude" would not be the right word, trust me! :D

Rather, I see a world of difference in "meaningful" (uh-oh) sexuality and that wrought by the culture industry, exploiting our, yes, (sexual) irrational desires in an effort to funnel our dollars into their pockets. A Bernaysian effort, indeed.

The biggest problem with sexually-oriented advertising is that it WORKS.

Until the public at large "grows up" intellectually, advertisers are going to continue to appeal to our base human desires/needs...because it works.
