Design & Architecture (prefab)

6040_house.jpgGreg La Vardera’s 6040 House (that’s 60 feet by 40 feet) is framed in steel—EcoSteel, to be exact, “an energy efficient construction technology” that’s also recyclable. The pre-engineered house offers solar and wind power options, as well as a rainwater harvesting system and off-grid toilets. With shipping possible from 13 points in the US, the distribution network is pretty widespread—and for a limited time, shipping won’t cost you a thing. $198,500 USD. Looks like an auto parts store next to a strip mall. Might be acceptable for such purely functional applications. But who'd want to live in one?

Why not use some eco-friendly paint? Then you can make it a lot more attractive.

Out of the steel box thought #1. Why do not the designers realize that all steel buildings become dented and ugly over time. Painting a prefab is what people want to avoid doing, as the ladder will increase denting. Instead of a flatprefab with stacked delivery, I think they should go for a legos approach. Panels of pre-fab steel of a handleable size can be popped off the exterior facing by twising an internal faster pin with an allen key inserted at the corners. They come in perhaps a dozen basic sizes in three aspect ratios. Removal allows for professional spray painting at a repair shop and now blow-over getting on windows. When you want a new look, remove a panel and trade it for someone else's in a different base color or texture.

Go really wild and offer panels with integrated SPV collectors on outside surface. Current is carried to internal storage device via the connecting pins.

Come on architects. Radical innovation is what we need.

I like the lego approach to prefab idea - time to get creative fellows!

These commenters are part of the problem. Oooo, my steel is dented, now my house is ugly. Give me a break. Everyone in this freaking country should be thankful for whatever damn shelter they have. I can say one thing for sure, this steel box is a helluva lot nicer than the rat-hole I currently live in.
