PSFK on Prefab

A thoughtful article on prefab is up at PSFK, covering houses like Loftcube, m-house, Ico Pods, and homes by retailers like Ikea and Muji. Their writer found that, while prefab might make sense in urban settings where space is at a premium, it still doesn’t really make financial sense in more wide-open parts of the United States. Interestingly, my company (www.riverfrontpark.com) recently priced out a pre-fab glass building - tkithouse.com - but found we could build something more quickly and for less by building it ourselves. (We were going to use it for a sales center - I know, I know, not a house...) Still, it was a bit of a disappointment.

Then I thought a little bit more about it. We have an incredible advantage from economies of scale. We're not trying to sell the building. We're building it and then getting rid of it - we've got an early lead on a buyer in the mountains of Colorado. And, we didn't want some of the accoutrements, including the Balthaup kitchen and built in fireplace. All in all, we were able to beat the price tkithouse.com offered, but I doubt we could have beaten their sales price if we were trying to make a profit.
