In praise of Brick Shithouses

brickshithousefridge.jpgThis fridge is over 60 years old and "runs great!" according to the owner of this most excellent vermouth joint in Barcelona. TreeHugger has not run a lifecycle analysis on it but we suspect that with a half-decent motor that this baby would do very well environmentally due to it's extremely long life. There's something reassuring about these older designs that were clearly built to last as long as possible. Imagine if in addition we could apply the many other principles of green design.. *please send us other fave examples of this type of design

Check out that hardware! No planned obsolescence here.

Great place for a 1 Euro Vermouth in Raval.

It's long been a problem with fridges that people throw them away when the seals go. I seem to remember a Tim Hunkin documentary where he dismantled old fridges and showed some uses that old fridge motors could be put to.

The best one was a special effects machine gun that was used for episodes of Dr Who...

Tim Hunkin's stuff is here http://www.rudimentsofwisdom.com/
