amazonriver.jpgTotally uninformed post. Haven't been here, don't know the details. I think it's an area on the Amazon where the darker, rainforest water meets the ligher, oceany water. (esteemed readers, please inform us in the comments). Whatever it is...it's pretty amazing looking no? [by Graham Hill] *click on image for larger view

I saw a documentary about the Amazon river the other night and I think this photo shows where the darker waters of the Rio Negro meet the Amazon.

Yes, they call it the meeting of the waters. It takes about half an hour boat trip from Manaus (capital of the state of amazonia, Brasil).

pH and density differ from the Rio Negro (=black river) to the Rio Solimões ( = the Amazon), so they don't mix instantly. Any tour to Manaus will include a trip to the meeting of the waters.

( Rio Negro has a very high acidity. This is great because it keeps mosquitoes away, unlike all the rest of the Amazon jungle. The river looks like a black mirror. Upstream from Manaus, the Rio Negro in cloudless nights you can watch stars twinkling in the river, as the night sky gets reflected in the water; even more beautiful then the meeting of the waters, I think. If you lay next to the water you feel like you are inside a sphere, instead under a sky dome as the all firmament is duplicated in the water…)
