The Freecycle Network
by on 02.15.05

I have a friend named Heidi whose house I always try to be at on the days she cleans out her closet. Heidi is a really good shopper. And when she does her Goodwill sweep, you want to be on the receiving end, because you’ll undoubtedly end up with a gorgeous shirt, some bed linens, and a belt that are all new to you (and likely NWT), even though she’s deemed them giveaways. Bet you wish you had a Heidi, huh? Well, now you do. It’s called Freecycle and it’s like the Craig’s List of giveaways and take-homes. The Freecycle Network, which started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Tucson and help save the desert landscape from being taken over by landfills, ...
provides individuals and non-profits an electronic forum to recycle unwanted items. Whether you want to find a new home for that chair that doesn’t fit your new apartment, an old fax machine, or a product that just didn’t work for your hair type (don’t you hate when that happens?) you can simply send an e-mail offering it to members of your Freecycle group. Need one of the above? It works both ways. The only big rule is that everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages, so no trading solar-powered sex toys or orange-flavored vodka, dig? For that, you’ll have to meet up at your own personal Heidi-type’s house. Thanks for the tip Peter Yao! ::Freecycle [by MO]

Excellent idea!
European readers check out www.betteruse.org for a similar service! ;)
You are obviously one of the freecycle bloggers, packing around the logo in your pocket.... Freecycling was a great idea, and the original concept still works, of course the company is now a corporation and the making of money and trademarking has ruined the "freecycle" movement but there are many other groups which maintain the original concept without joining the corporation. FREECYCLE IS ABOUT MAKING MONEY, not saving the landfills or living green, if you want to go back to the basic concept and FREE FREE FREE then check out the groups below....shame on your Deron Beal and your greedy freecycle corporation.
www.freeshare.savethisplanet.com (you will find groups listed by state and country, same concept, different names such as curbcycle, sharingisgiving and freeshare)
www.foodshare.US Free Share or freecyclin for food and basic needs items
How is Freecycle.org not free? I can't think of how they are making money..
shame on your Deron Beal and your greedy freecycle corporation.

But aren't these groups made up of the disgruntled who didn't get what they wanted, didn't stay within the few guidelines of the concept or just were plain out and out ill mannered and rude to members and moderators?
I believe that if you are truly into the concepts you mentioned, then why spend 'your' time bashing something that over 1 Million members find very beneficial, and it's all free. There's no charge to be a member. Spend time building your version. If it's truly better then everyone will flock to it, but I don't see that.
I assume you mean shame due to Freecycle accepting corporate sponsorship? Who do you think pays the bills for the server and the attorneys, and insurance?
