Mole Architects' Black House is Green

black_house.jpgCould the Black House be some sort of anti-White House? Quite possibly, given the eco-friendliness of the former compared with the environmental record of the latter. Taking the local vernacular barn as a springboard, Meredith Bowles designed the Black House as an “oversized shed” for his family to live in. Noted for its green materials (including insulation recycled from newspapers) and energy efficiency, the 3-storey Cambridgeshire house cost only £170,000 ($318,000 USD)—low-cost green houses can be built even without an off-the-shelf design. The Royal Institute of British Architecture named the house New Home of the Year for 2004 (Swiss Re tower received their Stirling Prize). Via the Observer ::Mole Architects [by KK]
