Governator Requires More Energy Efficiency

Listen kids, we’re just as confused with this Governator shiz as anyone, but we can’t say we’re displeased about the latest of the dude’s executive orders. Turns out Ahnold has taken yet another green step toward making California an environmental leader. On December 14, he signed an executive order that requires, among other things, that all new or renovated state buildings meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver rating or higher. That’s the body’s second strictest rating, and will require buildings to meet certain energy efficiency and materials criteria.
The order also commits the state to “aggressive action” for increasing energy and cost efficiency in existing and new state buildings and will encourage cities, counties, and schools to do the same.
Additionally, the state will require its proprietary buildings to reduce grid-based energy purchases by an impressive 20 percent by 2015. The order doesn’t mention whether or not households with more than five Hummers will be considered energy-abusers, nor is there any word on whether the Schwarzeneggers will experiment with powering their home using excess energy generated by Maria’s commitment to her exercise bike.
