Dyson vacuum cleaners really suck

Design & Architecture (flooring)

dyson-yellow.jpgWhen Dyson vacuum cleaners first appeared they looked way peculiar and cost a pretty packet. “Too expensive!” the pundits exclaimed (Didn’t they say that about the Prius and iPod too?). Be that as it may, Dyson is the only other brand that has a recognisable name in the vacuuming game. And indeed, that Really Big name even tried to copy it, but lost the patent infringement suit. Why is it so good? Because it uses centrifigal force to lift dust out of carpet. A force up to 200,000 times that of gravity, to be precise. In a lowly household vacuum. Was a tricky thing to develop - took designer James Dyson, 15 years and 5,127 prototypes to figure it out. All very interesting, but the real reason we like them is because there are no more disposable filter bags and you use less electrical energy ‘cos the job gets done well, first time.::Dyson [by WM]

Cool engineering is great, but Dyson only placed 13th in a Consumer Reports roundup of vacuums:

...which heavily weights price as a factor.

Worth every penny. Got stuff out of my carpet that I never knew existed. My husband voluntarily vacuums the entire house two or three times a week!

Funny you should mention this, I just bought a new vacuum cleaner last night. I did alot of research and indeed Dyson does make the technologically best vacuum cleaner, however $400 (their cheapest) was more than I wanted to spend. I'm down with cutting down waste though, so I ended up with a $100 Eureka bagless with a washable filter and a HEPA on the exhaust (I'm not allergic, just don't like vacuum smell) Works just fine, and I don't expect the loss of suction issue to become a real problem as I clean the filter each time I empty the bin (which I do each time I vacuum the house) takes 5 minutes.

The 13th place is the overall performance rating which has nothing to do with price. Sometimes the more expensive products do have the best performance ranking, sometimes they don't. The price becomes a factor, when Consumer Reports chooses the 'best buy's.

As tara said, the rating has absolutely nothing to do with price. I checked the issue and confirmed it.

AHHAHHAHA what is this? Another website put out by all the other Vac makers trying to convince you the Dyon sucks and there vacuums are better????? http://obviousdiversion.com/index.php?p=170

"Obviousdiversion is the PERFECT NAME FOR THAT SITE. Go to a REAL review site for a Real review.

Consumer Reports put the Kenmore Progressive Upright vacuum in the top three. I had it and it broke in less than two years. They test these vacuums but no long term use testing so who cares if it works the best for some tests. Is it still going to work well in 2 years.
