TreeHugger's Aussie Correspondent: Warren McLaren!
by Warren McLaren, Sydney on 11. 3.04
Warren McLaren was once asked what drove his design. He answered “There’s always a better way and never give in.” Such grandiose proclamations would see him dripping in sweat, in a tin garage, at the height of an Australian summer, designing of all things - down mountaineering jackets for a European client. Slightly more sensible projects include writing and lecturing in ecodesign or leading teams to conserve penguin habitat. Backcountry skiing and snorkelling keep him sane. But Sydney school kids still stare at him as he rides his Moulton to work.

Hello Warren,
I am the designer of the IXI Bike that you reviewed on Treehugger. I just wanted to give my thanks. I am really glad to hear how much you enjoyed the idea and execution of the bike. It was a real lengthy but rewarding project for me. One thing that I thought I would correct- the bike is painted silver. We originally wanted it to be anodized instead of painted, but the process was a little too expensive for a part as big as the frame. (even in two halves!)
Thank you very much again.

I just want to say when they came out with plastic is better than paper they didn't take into account every time you go grocery shopping you always end up using two to three times as many plastic bags as paper because they are much smaller and the plastic is not as strong and they end up breaking.I never
use plastic.
Thank you so much Warren and TreeHugger for visiting One World Backpackers and taking an interest in what we are trying to achieve. We have a million ideas that will find their way into our business operational plan to lessen the impact on our environment without having a negative one on our guests' comfort.
Great magazine by the way.

Hi Warren,
I just discovered your numerous posts on bikes in developing countries, including a mention of the organisation I run, the Bicycling Empowerment Network Namibia.
I have a couple of post topics you might like to explore that relate to our work--one on a bicycle ambulance we are manufacturing and distributing, and another on a partnership we have with a network called Bicycles For Humanity that is teaching communities in affluent countries how to collect and ship bicycles here in shipping containers that become bike shops in Namibian towns and villages.
Please get in touch if you're interested.
