Peter Danko's Gotham Rocking Chair

Design & Architecture (chairs)

gotham rocker.jpgPeter Danko of Danko Persing designed the Gotham Rocker, which is made with a bent plywood frame and seat webbing from recycled automotive seat belts that won't stretch out. Using ply-bending furniture techniques yields up to 8-10 times more usable wood from a log than solid lumber. It's an extremely efficient technique, requiring far fewer resources than conventional wood furniture production. $820 ::Vivavi [by MO]

Is there a certified sustailable (fsc?) bendy plywood available on the market? Would love to know if anyone is making this product.

Thank you.

The bendy plywood is executed through a high pressure steam process. It allows normal plywood to become "ply-able". (ha! I kill myself). However, much of the plywoods on the market have a formaldahyde (I need spell check on this thing) resin in them which has a bit of an off-gassing problem (ie, not good for our planet). There are some plywoods available though, in Scandanvia that are high pressure birch plywoods that have no ill side effects. These are used in the contract furniture (ie, office furniture) industry when they are trying to meet "green" requirements. One such company is Berco, which manufactures training room and breakroom tables.
