As rough-hewn as the sculptural furniture he creates, Tyler Hays never fails to have dirt under his fingernails, paint splattered on his jeans, and, on the tip of his lips, a cut-to-the-chase observation. To wit: “What’s the point of embracing sustainable materials and processes if the design is for shit and the client’s just going to toss it in the dumpster in a few years?” he says, deflating high-design’s bombastic tendencies and environmentalism’s preachiness in a single gesture. Eco-friendliness isn’t Hays’s schtick per se, but a byproduct of his chosen métier: low-key, heirloom-quality pieces like this lush Lake dresser, fronted in painterly panels of reclaimed holly.
