I talk to Think MTV's Pete Griffin on greening the Real World, what the MTV-Generation cares about, and how to sell green to an audience that isn't easily bought out.

Tune in June 11, 2008 during the 9-10p Real World, 11p-12a Real World, and same time again on June 18, 2008 to catch the Real World Green House tour during the commercial interstitials.

5. Ben Jelen
I saw Ben play live for the first time at the Replay store during their Earth Day party. His dreamy piano-playing and sweet nature somehow makes his call-to-action on environmental issues an easy pill to swallow. Easy on the eyes as much as on the ears, the young musician's songs often share a central theme: Our world is in flux and we need to wake up and do something-as individuals, as communities, and as a united planet.

This week the US Senate will begin debate on the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2007 and a new bill called Investing in Climate Action and Protection Act (iCAP). I gather Representative Ed Markey, Chair of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, who is introducing the latter bill, will no doubt receive opposition. ... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Tommy Lee and Ludacris Take The Stage at Green Apple Fest

"Go easy on me," Tommy Lee said in a whisper. "You know I'm a green virgin."

"Sorry Tommy," I said with a smile. "I like to go deep."

Earth Day celebration in San Francisco is probably the perfect place to give Tommy Lee and Ludacris the Green 101. The artists, (both who are participants in Planet Green's Battleground Earth), paid a visit to the Bay Area during the Green Apple Festival. They may have well been on another planet though, because you know how freaky cool San Francisco can get around Earth Day *wink, wink*.

Traveling the open oceans is not for everyone-sea mist, salt spray, tossing rock-a-bye-baby waves, and Dramamine days. Some people, though, were born for it. Case in point: Captain Charles Moore, third-generation resident of Long Beach, California and founder of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation. Now just more than sixty years of age, the weathered seafarer is the principal researcher on the ocean studying the pelagic plastic phenomenon in the Pacific. I recently had the privilege to head out on one of their research trips on behalf of Planet Green to understand the issues that are at hand. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/02/great_pacific_garbage_patch.php... Read the full story on TreeHugger

State of the Planet Conference Puts Nuclear on the Table

Lady Barbara Thomas Judge, chairman of the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority at the State of the Planet Conference in New York City.

The State of the Planet Conference convened at the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York City this past Thursday and Friday. Man, have special interests grabbed the environmental movement like a bulldog by the throat, or what? Perhaps I'm getting increasingly hypersensitive as we continue to slog on, but panelists seemed more divided by the issues this year than in 2006. In short, we all agree that we must do something, but none of us can agree on what that should be.

[This is a guest post by Summer Rayne Oakes. -Ed.] "Ring, Ring," Elizabeth Martin-Perera, a Climate Policy Specialist with the NRDC's Climate Center picks up the phone. It's an acquaintance at BP. The voice on the other end asks, "What is this Power Shift thing that I keep hearing about. Is it something I should know about? Should I be concerned?"

Elizabeth, who spoke on the Climate Legislation panel at Power Shift a few days ago, chuckled at the sound of worry in the woman's voice. "And I'll just add that every single person on The Hill knows you are coming."

Damn straight they knew we were coming. Even Nancy Pelosi, who showed up to speak at Power Shift, was caught off guard. ... Read the full story on TreeHugger

TreeHugger welcomes Summer Rayne Oakes

Summer Rayne Oakes is an entomologist and environmental scientist by training. In 2000, she slung her hiking boots to her travel pack and embarked on a journey of cause-related modeling to push sustainability issues through fashion and media. Oakes' work spans multiple disciplines, all of which are deeply imbued in environmental research. Her studies in organic contaminants & environmental health, mine reclamation, rain forest regeneration, invasive species, landscape impact analysis, aquatic entomology, sustainable development, and green jobs overlap with her modeling with a cause, for which she is largely recognized.

She is now a resident expert and advisor for Discovery Network's new channel, Planet Green and Treehugger.com. She travels the world as a model, consultant, and spokesperson, assisting companies, organizations, and events on sustainability issues,
while always adding a little of her own personal style. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for her first book on sustainable fashion and beauty coming out this December-January entitled, "Style, Naturally: The Global Guide to Sustainable Style & Beauty."... Read the full story on TreeHugger
