Tired and exhilarated, Bill shared the feeling of having won the victory of shutting down the coal-fired Capitol Power Plant in Washington D.C. Well guess what? TreeHugger founder Graham Hill sat down with professional surfer and now "drifter" Rob Machado. The film The Drifter follows Machado in Indonesia as he surfs and attempts to drop out a bit in order to get in touch with nature and ultimately himself. Most TreeHuggers are familiar with the increased resource strain brought about by the ever-increasing human population, and Machado's journey highlights some of the challenges as well as the opportunities of living in a crowded world. A Google data center in Belgium is taking a cool, new approach to keeping from over-heating on hot days. The facility has no electricity-sucking chillers to support its cooling systems, relying instead on air from outside. Google anticipates this so-called "free cooling" for all but about seven days per year, but what's really fascinating is what happens when the weather gets hot.... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Fabien Cousteau: Ocean Exploration, Industry & You

Apparently one of the dirty little secrets of fighting for a clean energy future (beginning right now, please : ) is that the pursuit can be downright fun. Although we couldn't make it to the State Department yesterday, the goings on in the photos sure do make us wish we could have stopped by, perhaps even with cool-o wind turbine effigy in hand. in addition to the good time had by the approx 150 people involved in the action, the organizers handed out quotes by people from around the world about their local green economy to Jonathan Pershing's (Deputy Special Envoy for Climate Change) assistant.
Clean American Dream Ad from MoveOn.org

Last week, the Obama administration offshore regulations for energy production were announced and during an Earth Day speech, President Obama held forth on the virtues of renewables (and clean coal?). Well a couple of years back, we told you about the now decade-old MoveOn organization petitioning the congressional vote of solar and wind, bill H.R. 969. Now in the '09, MoveOn has just sent out an email alert that Congress is about to begin voting on the biggest clean energy jobs plan in America to date, however siting two sources, the advocacy org says that it learned last week that a few conservative Democrats on the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee are conspiring to weaken it. The group says that the Dem leader is threatening to block the bill from even reaching the House floor unless it's changed to make the coal industry happy-and delay America's switch to a clean energy economy. The video ad above is being run in the districts of three swing Democrats in Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas.... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle, Relate: A Post-Earth Day Manifesto

For Earth Day yesterday, TreeHugger TV dropped in at the Earth School on Manhattan's Lower East Side to listen in on a chat about New York City's own Newtown Pippin apple and to plant a seedling with the gradeschoolers. This "forgotten fruit," an NYC heirloom apple, was the favorite apple of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and loved by Benjamin Franklin and Queen Victoria, among others. A push is now being made to repopulate the city with these firm, tart, little beauties. Once one learns about their storied past, the breathtaking possibilities of their restoration to New York become crisp and clear: a step back in the right direction toward biodiversity, local food production and consumption, as well as perhaps becoming the jewel in the crown of remediation on America's most polluted waterway Newtown Creek. The third-annual Project Earth Day fashion show is sure to be one of the hotter Earth Week events here in NYC and we should know having had the opportunity to get up close to the action and put together some videos of lovely green ladies in outstanding eco outfits. Obama welcomes "bold steps toward opening America's oceans and new energy frontier."

The United States Interior Department just issued regulations governing offshore renewable energy projects that use wind, ocean currents and wave power for producing electricity. The offshore leasing rules for electricity production had stalled for two years over of a turf dispute as it were between governmental agencies, but that bottleneck has been broken. A wayward whale swimming around in New York harbor provides the excitement which comes only with our reconnecting with our natural world - woot! The whale, possibly a humpback, was first noticed Wednesday and the coast guard set up a safety zone to protect the twenty-foot whale from collisions with commercial shipping vessels -- there's an awesome aerial shot with the beautiful beastie surrounded by four boats protecting it. Once more with feeling: four boats cradling it almost with palpable, technologically-enabled love. By all accounts, this doesn't seem to be another PETA publicity stunt but rather, if you will, a rather organic occurrence: Colorado woman applies for the vanity plate ILVTOFU, is rejected by authorities on grounds that it might be read as I-LV-TO-FU.... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Poland Geothermal & Hot Tubs with Eddie Murphy SNL Sketch (Videos)

The Earth's crust in Poland is thinner that in other parts of the world thus making it easier to drill the heated water necessary for providing geothermal energy to homes and hot tubs. Geothermal in Poland is becoming a viable alternative to fossil fuels, but high costs and bureaucracy are providing some obstacles. Parts of the mountain resort Zakopane in southern Poland are heated using geothermal energy, although some people still need to burn coal in their stoves to keep warm. Here's a video with some history on the NYC Icon, now striving to become the American Idol of energy efficiency achieved by means of retrofiting. The clip features the team from Rocky Mountain Institute and goes into the planning process. Now they're presenting a new program called EcoBizNYC the mission of which is to help small businesses, students, and the general public to actively reduce air pollution, carbon emissions, and airborne environmental health hazards in NYC through environmental auditing, education, and action. The first workshop happens tonight, Tuesday, April 7. Amongst the many benefits on the table, free NYSERDA-certified energy audits. This past Palm Sunday, Fauna and Flora International highlighted the overexploitation of palms in Central America in an attempt to raise awareness of the impact that global demand for palm leaves is having on some of the world's most pristine rainforests. We're no strangers to the intersection of religion and the environment, and we even told you about September 1: Eastern Orthodox Earth Day and The Green Patriarch. BTW, for Eastern Orthodox, Palm Sunday has yet to occur so we have yet another opportunity to reflect, or even pray if you will, on the seriousness of yet another threat to biodiveristy.... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Concept: CO2 Scrubber Wrist Watch

With discussion of using big-ass artificial trees to scrub-a-dub-dub CO2 from the atmosphere, here comes a little item for each of us to use: eCO2 is an athletic wrist watch, powered by kinetic energy, aiming to reduce individual carbon footprints by using CO2 scrubber technology. We know we need to bring down the level of atmospheric CO2 down to the acceptable level of 350 ppm to sustain life as we know it, but does this concept promise to be a key to individuals becoming responsible citizens of this planet or is it a hair-brained, resource-extraction and life-cycle intensive gizmo ultimately with a net-positive carbon wristprint?... Read the full story on TreeHugger
