What's the definition of a "green job"?. What's a "green economy"? Can either represent a better, more viable economy than the one we've got now? 3p contributors and readers pondered these questions in our week long green labor day series.

We've been working our tails off to get the site better looking, better organized, and more user friendly and what you see here is what we've come up with. We've got better, more clear categorization, some cleaner design, nifty post "hoppers" on the side to help you navigate, and a few more things to come!

Have fun poking around and let us know if anything's broken (as if that could possibly happen). I really hope you like it and want to send some special shouts of thanks out to Michael Graham Richard, our chief editor, Eva Jacobus who helped in the migration, Federico Silvka - the master designer from Barcelona, as well as Jessica Root, our priceless manager and Graham Hill for busting this whole thing together.

Note from Michael: And of course, we all want to thank our excellent media architect, master of all things technical and of actually implementing all these fancy ideas that we come up with (and coming up with a lot of them himself), Nick Aster. We've all been working really hard lately, but I'm sure that he had an extra dose of that. Thanks Nick!... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Vloggie Victory! TreeHuggerTV Wins Best Green Vlog

Saturday night turned out to be a whole lot more fun than expected, with hundreds in attendance at San Francisco's Swedish American Hall - see the photos here. Leonora and I were in attendence representing TreeHugger and were as thrilled and suprised as anyone to see TreeHuggerTV in lights as the winner in the "Green Vlog" category!

Have a look at Robert Scoble's blog for the full breakdown of winners, and Tom Foremski's funky videos, especially Lucaso's mixed up Diggrz set.

We wouldn't have gotten anywhere, however, without the priceless mastery of Simran Sethi and the rest of the THTV crew - Damien Somerset, George Spyros, Lindsey Lake, Ari Kuschnir, Chris Baldwin and the whole TreeHugger team! So busy that we didn't notice that TreeHuggerTV has been nominated for a Vloggie! So busy, in fact, we didn't even know there was such a thing as a Vloggie - an illustrious award for video weblogs. THTV has been nominated in the "Green Vlog" category.

It's too late for us to stack the vote as the ballots are closed, so just sit back and wait for the drum roll. The winners will be announced on Saturday at a star studded event in San Francisco!

And in the meantime, send some love to our fellow Green Vlog finalists:

Here's a little fun for your weekend! A sneak preview of the soon-to-be new-and-improved TreeHugger. We've been toiling day and night on all corners of the globe to get the site better organized, better looking, and faster. The following mock up is what we've got to show for ourselves so far. It shouldn't be too long until we get things running faster in generall too.

I decided that the most useful input we could get from you all would be from a totally blind preview - no explanations, no hints, just have a look and tell us what you think as a regular TreeHugger reader, or as if you were landing here for the first time.

Bear in mind, this is just a graphical mock up and none of the links work, all the text is dummy text, and Robert Redford has no idea we stole his mugshot. The one thing I enabled is the "post jumper" click navigation. Have fun, be merciless in your critiques, and generous in your praise.

Only three finalists left!

The Umbrella Inside Out Fashion competition has finally wound its way down to a mere 2 final candidates. Remember - designers were asked to submit plans for a couture garment made almost entirely from used or discarded umbrellas. The winner, as you know, will appear at Paris's Ethical Fashion Show October 13!

The final entries are:

The Dusty & Umbrella Redesign.

Please head over to the Umbrella Inside Out page to cast your votes...

ED NOTE: Folks, my appologies - there were some problems with the survey script this morning and I had to move it over to the umbrella page for it to properly work. As a result, votes cast before 9am Pacific Time have not been tallied. If you voted before that time please head over to the Umbrella Page and you will be able to vote again. You can get the whole list of opening dates by clicking "find a theater" on the film's website.

All in all, it's a fantastic, satisfying, and inspiring film. It lays down an explanation of global warming in wonderfully articulate detail. Coupled with what we like to refer to as the "sustainability tipping point", I believe it will represent the first large scale moment of awakening to the issue for the American public. This really is the experience that will leave no doubt in anyone's mind of the severe realities of what could face us.

But understanding the issue is only the first step. Whether or not this film produces positive action, despair, or denial is the big question.

Problem number one is that there will be a well financed backlash to this film. Please read on for more...... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Chicago Climate Exchange 101

I've been talking about The Chicago Climate Exchange a lot over on Triple Pundit, but I thought it was time TreeHugger readers got a little 101 on this very interesting cap and trade program to reduce CO2 emissions.

One of the most effective methods of reducing a particular pollutant is to create a cap and trade program. This means that an authority such as government states that only some amount of the pollutant will be permitted, per year, and that each company in the country or state is permitted some amount, generally a bit less than their historical norm. After that, if a company manages to reduce its emissions by a greater amount than they were legally bound to, they may sell the "right to pollute" to other companies who have been unable to meet their target.

The United States created a very effective cap and trade program to deal with Sulphur Dioxide in1990, and the EU has now begun using cap and trade as a way to reduce CO2 - in keeping with the Kyoto accord. But what's a country to do if they're not a Kyoto signatory, and their government doesn't want to create a market for a particular emission, say CO2?

Simple - get a bunch of companies together and create your own market! A growing group of companies, including DuPont, Dow, Ford, Bayer and numerous city governments (see the impressive list here) have signed on to a legally binding contract to reduce their emissions, and trade their right to pollute on a free market exhange based in Chicago - the CCX.

So what would possess a major corporation to voluntarily do anything a long these lines, much less legally bind themselves to do so? Read on for the reasons...... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bikes on Transit: The Bay Area Story

Despite all the fabulous development in hybrids and alternative fuels lately, we all know that the best ecological choice you can make is to ditch the guzzler altogether and ride a bike! It's cheap, healthy, and sometimes even faster (if you live in a hectic city like I do). Unfortunately, biking isn't always practical for a great many people who either live too far, have poor bike infrastructure, or just don't have the information to make it seem feasible.

That said, certain transit agencies are starting to tackle the first of those problems by making room for bikes on trains and busses. It's an ideal solution for long distance commuters who might live a mile or two from a train station and also work a mile or two from a station on the other end. In the Bay Area, the various transit agencies have done a decent job in this regard. How about your neck of the woods? It seems to me a great way to give people more options - making both transit and biking easier.

Because I live here, I'll give a little breakdown of what's available around the Golden Gate. After the jump, tell us what's going on in your area...... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Thanks to Pair Networks (again)

Once again, it's time to give a shout out to Pair Networks, our reliable and responsive web host. They've been steadily upgrading our hosting as TreeHugger grows, and have a pretty solid environmental consiousness that we've mentioned before.

Last Friday we had a big jump in traffic that temporarily ground us to a halt. I got on the phone with Pair and they threw in some extra memory for us and got us back on track in no time - awesome customer service can be as important as any green policy when it comes to running a company sustainably. Anyway, we've got some new gadgetry up our sleeves so look forward to a faster site in the near future.

As always, toss any tech questions or trouble my way! Hunter Lovins, Part II

Ed West and I are excited to bring Treehugger readers the second part of our interview with L. Hunter Lovins. In the first part of our interview, Hunter talked about work she's been doing to strengthen local economies in a sustainable manner and some specific projects she's been spearheading in Afghanistan. In case you missed part one, have a click here and give it a read. Part one also ended with a survey which we hope will strengthen the case for socially and environmentally sustainable economic development in Afghanistan. If you haven't had a chance to take the survey, please take a couple minutes and do so here.

Without further ado, let's get back to where we left off.

Hi Hunter, thanks again for talking with us. Much of what ties together your work involves demonstrating that there is a business case for sustainability. What are the problems we're facing, and how does business play a role?

Capitalism is the worst economic system... except for all the rest! It has many flaws that its critics are quick to point out. What we now have is what you might call a "market democracy," which can be summed up as: How many politicians can you afford to buy? This sort of capitalism is a part of what's driving us in the direction of "unsustainability." But it is also bad capitalism. I believe capitalism, conducted according to its real logic, is an important part of the solution to the very serious challenges facing us today. The business community has not only the opportunity, but the obligation to step up and take a leadership role in crafting a future that works for us all. The business leaders that accept this challenge will be the billionaires of tomorrow. The rest....well, as Ed Wollard of DuPont once said, "They won't be a problem, because they won't be around."... Read the full story on TreeHugger

The TH Interview: L. She has also co-authored dozens of papers and nine books, including the landmark work, Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution, which has helped to bring the concepts of "natural capital" and Natural Capitalism into mainstream business thinking through her company, Natural Capitalism Solutions.

Her areas of interest and expertise include Natural Capitalism, globalization, governance, land management, energy, water, green real-estate development, and community economic development.

In the first half of this two-part interview, Hunter talks a bit about her current international work promoting and implementing sustainability around the world.... Read the full story on TreeHugger

A Really Quick Five Minute Action Survey

Hey Treehuggers! Got a few minutes? Some of my colleagues at the Presidio School of Management's Sustainable MBA program are doing a short survey about the different sorts of ways we use the Internet to find activating information - the kinds of things that engage you, inspire you, and make you feel you can make a difference. We're also trying to assess what's missing out there. As readers of Treehugger, we think you're the perfect audience to help us out. ...and Graham Hill has been especially generous to let us do it here! The results of the survey will help some well meaning business school students (yes, we exist) help understand what we can offer to you in the future, and they'll help Treehugger too!

We haven t launched it yet but plan to relatively soon. We would love if you would comment below as to what you would like to see...

1-how many times per week or month would you like it?
2-what kind of content would you like to see?
3-would this supplement or replace your visits to treehugger?
4-any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time!
