Poetic photos chronicle 5 years of father-daughter road trips exploring nature

Photographer Jesse Burke took daughter Clover on adventures with beach, land, animals, and sky as the destination.

The beauty of nature and exploration seems lost on so many children in modern society. Not only do we live in a digital world where adventure all too often comes in the form of a screen, but there’s a trend towards parents being increasingly protective. Of course no parent wants their child to get hurt, but there’s so much more to learn from getting muddy in a creek than mastering a video game.

One father, photographer Jesse Burke, seems to have taken this to heart when he set out to give his daughter, Clover, an education in the natural world. To nurture a relationship between his daughter and the great outdoors, Burke took Clover on a series of road trips over five years with the landscape and its inhabitants as their teachers. His goal? To instill a sense of appreciation, respect, conservation, and self-confidence ... with the wild world acting as their guide.

Burke documented their travels as they studied beaches, land, sky, and animals, the photos of which comprise the beautiful love-letter of a book called Wild & Precious. From the book's site:

This book is as much about love and parenting as it is a hands-on training manual of new age environmentalism. Wild & Precious reveals the fragile, complicated relationship that humans share with nature and serves as a call to arms for parents and children everywhere: Get outside!

Burke, who has two other children in addition to Clover, writes, “I want my children to genuinely understand how magical the world we inhabit is and how we, as humans, are an integral part of the system. I want them to feel a deep connection to every aspect of their surroundings."

Looking at the photos it's clear that Clover is well on her way, if not already there.
