Rock On, Greenly: Carbon Offset Ticket Option a Success at 2008 Music Festivals

This year, when buying tickets to Lollapalooza or Austin City Limits—two of the most celebrated annual music festivals in the nation—purchasers were offered the option of adding a "Fan Tag," to the event pass. By buying the Fan Tag at an extra five bucks, fans essentially are purchasing 500 kWh worth of carbon offsets through Be Green, the carbon offset division of Green Mountain Energy Company. Oh, it's a nice idea, you may be dismissively thinking to yourself, but how many rock fans are really that inclined to tack five extra dollars onto an already expensive festival pass? Turns out over 10,000 fans opted for the Be Green Fan Tag—four times as many as last year. That's a pretty staggering improvement in a single year's time. Be Green estimates that the purchased offsets are equal to preventing 6.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere—akin to taking 600 cars off the road for a year.
It makes sense—rock musicians have long been some of the most vocal proponents of environmental awareness (Sheryl Crow and toilet paper, anyone?). So it makes sense that fans are willing to shell out the extra buck to support similar causes. The program also speaks volumes about the progress carbon offsets have made in becoming a widely understood and popular eco-active practice. And though some continue to dispute the efficacy of carbon offsets, at the very least it signals a growing support for renewable attitude and positively shifting paradigm towards greener thinking.
