While 75% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, only 2.5% of that water is fresh water. However, 3/4 of that fresh water is locked up in glaciers and permanent snow cover. Only 0.3 percent of the water is surface water, found in rivers and lakes. The rest is buried deep in the ground. Bottom line: water is essential to life, and while there is more than enough to supply all humans with their basic needs, it is a resource that must be thoughtfully used.
